Currently I have the following equipment:
Onkyo CD player/receiver
Pioneer dvd player
H/K receiver (2-channel, so simple operation)
toshiba TV (soon: LCD tv)
an old VCR (Emerson?)

I'm looking for a universal remote; i don't want to spend a lot of money, and don't need a lot of fancy functions...just the major functions (on/off, open/close, vol. up/down, change channels, dvd-cd:/play/pause/stop/skip etc), and hopefully the ability to "learn" from existing remotes with "the face-to-face" (IR) technique. (in case there no "codes" for some of my stuff, although they're not that old).
when i get the LCD tv sometime in the near future, i can use its own remote, so as not to be too demanding from the universal, in case the lcd TV has a lot functions ...the universal can be used for all the other equipment.
(backlight/LCD would be great, but if price is good, those can be omitted)
So...what would be dependable a universal remote with the above requirements in the $30-$40 range?
Thanks a lot.

I got a "One For All" URC-8811. Walmart had the same thing but called theirs a URC-8810W. These things are completely programmable and can handle anything at all. There's a Yahoo group that has zillions of downloadable commands available. You can get a JP1 interface and download from your PC if you wish. Mine cost around $30 with a JP1 interface cable. Here's a forum where you can find out more than you ever wanted to know about these things.
