so my trusty 97 Tbird (4.6L) with 140k or so miles has been getting oil changes with MC 5w30 and MC filter at the dealer every 6k - 7k.
We just got back from a 800 miles round trip to Knoxville, TN and the Tbird performed great.

So I thought I would do the following this time, as I have a free OC coupon at the dealership, to do a sort of annual "cleaning" (the Tbird does see some short trip driving):

I've always thought that Lubeguard products are pretty decent.

1)I am going to add the Lubeguard Engine flush, and let the engine idle 10 min as per instructions, then get the oil changed at the local independent Ford shop - he might even let bring some of my own oil that I have, although i am not sure about this.

2) Then I am going to take the Bird on the Hwy and get some good old hwy driving for a few hrs to get the new oil circulate and get some more "dirt" out, in addition to whatever the LG flush helped get out.

3) After the drive get my free oil change at the dealer with fresh MC 5w30 and new MC filter.

what do you guys think about this procedure for once a yr "cleaning" ?

I don't believe these flush products reccommend driving the vehicle during the cleaning process. You may want to double check with lubegard on that.

no no I am not going to DRIVE it with the LG in - i am only going to drive it AFTER getting the 1st oil change after using the flush as recommended.
Read (1) again in my post...

(I'll be idling the engine with LG at the o/c place, so I don't have to drive the car after putting it in)

Oh okay good I miss understood with the 2 changes.

Sounds like a goos plan to me. LG products are very good. I don't usually condome the use of flushes but with your short trips it might not be a bad idea to do it yearly
 
I don't see any harm with the plan you have for the flush. For a moment there when I first read your initial message I mistook trusty for "rusty" and lol'd.

I guess to many people are having trouble understanding the thread :P

i am tempted to add the Bio tech protectant from LG after getting the oil changed, but it's kinda pricey, and idk if it's overkill...

This paragraph kinda implies that you were going to put in the flush and then drive it to the Ford shop, I can see how the confusion happened. Glad you're not going to drive with that in your sump:)
 
yeah you're right.
I should have added that I'll be driving to the ind. shop 1st, then put the LG in, and sit 10 min in the parking lot of the shop, idling the engine with LG in, before asking them to change the oil ...

hopefully the short "drive" from the parking lot to the o/c bay won't hurt anything...

Anyway now that we are all on the same I say go for it with the Biotech additive. Anychance maybe we could get a used oil analysis after your OCI?
 
I can say that I did the same thing in my 96 GT. Same motor, I, had purchased the car 2 years ago with 57k on the odometer, it was a 1 owner vehicle.

I, ran the Lubegard flush as instructed, I believe I installed castrol GTX. I, ran that for about 1000 miles, The oil removed was very dark.

I then put in regular Mobil 1 a couple times with short intervals. Running Redline currently and the oil is very clean looking, though I know that means nothing.

The Lubegard flush is probably one of the only ones I would use. It is a mild product, unlike some of the others on the market. During this same period I ran a couple doses of the Techron through the fuel, I felt an improvement using that.

I run the Lubegard Red in my transmission, this I added after having a Transgo shift kit installed, along with new transmission fluid. my shifts are very smooth/quick.

I have used the Bio Tech Protectant, I will say that I noticed no difference using that, perhaps an improvement in idle smoothness, though it may have been the Techron added as well.

I will say that Lubegard products are one of the few additives that I trust in my vehicle.

I am still not sure if I really would use the Biotech. I WANT to, but the flush, oil change and biotech and then a used oil analysis will set me back quite a bit - i am still in the "poor student" mode...but I will def. consider getting the Bio tech.

We'll see - I will definitely post if I get to do all that.
I should be getting the flush and the 1st oil change done pretty soon...

so i ordered the LG flush...but now I am rethinking the order of steps in my plan: which order would get more gunk out?

1) add LG flush to current 7k mile old oil --> change current oil and LG flush out--> put new "cheap" rinse oil in and drive ~1k miles --> change "rinse" oil out --> get new MC "fresh" oil.

OR: this order of things: (different point of adding LG)

2) change current 7k mile old oil--> put new "cheap" rinse oil in and drive ~ 1k miles --> add the LG flush, idle for 10 min and change that oil out --> get new MC "fresh" oil

which method/sequence would get more junk out, I wonder?
 
Drive till you engine is nice and warm. Add the LG flush and idle for the time suggested on the bottle. Change the oil with the cheapest dino you can find and run it for 1K. Then go get the free oil changed at the stealership.
 
UPDATE:

did the "flush" today...pretty much stuck to the instructions on the bottle: drove to the quick lube place, and got engine warm, parked right near the oil change bay, put the LG flush in, idled for 10-15 minutes, and got the oil (7,995 miles on that MC 5/30) changed; quick lube place used Castrol GTX 5w30 - no clue what filter - engine sounds a bit louder, probably because it's not the usual 5/30, or my ears are freaking out...

Now I am gonna drive the rest of the month to my internship - should get me about 890 miles of "rinse" with the GTX. Then off to the dealer to get my free o/c with the usual MC 5w30 and MC filter...

will update.
