Going bottom dollar at WalMart tire center tomorrow

One hour until the appointment. I will post the results of my experience. FWIW, the tires that are coming off are 6 years old and have sat for over 3 years while the car was inoperative. After repairs and starting to drive it a month ago the tires have what feels like flat spots in them and will not round out.

The treads have cracks in them all the way around each tire near the edges and the rubber turned to a strange hard greyish look. The date code is 01/20. Sad because there is a lot of tread left on them. The tires coming off are a Desert Hawk UHP Chinesiums.

Two of the four TPMS sensors have stopped working as well. Sooo it's time.

PONTIACHO: The only thing I am entitled to is a good install and timely service that I paid for provided by Walmart. Walmart clamors for all of us to do business with them, why else would they run commercials, ads, have a website, and be the largest retailer on the planet if they didn't clamor? People doing work get respect and admiration when the job is done right. Not all people who clock in are worthy of respect. Those who steal from their companies, damage property, fake workers comp injures and do a crummy job among other things do not deserve respect IMHO.

Though my experience is limited, I've had good results with the local TLE. I suppose it varies by location, though.

Me too. They're a little slow (1 1/2 hours to mount and balance 4 tires) but never an issue and I've had several tires done there for different vehicles.

PS: Is the OP saying these 'new' tires were made 6 years ago?. I'd be more concerned about their age than being made in Thailand or TLE doing the mount and balance.

I’d say this needs a caveat. ALL PEOPLE deserve respect. Point blank. Period. Full stop.

The difference is, whether those people choose to KEEP that initial respect is entirely up to them.

If you go into an interaction with someone you’ve never met like they owe you something because they are willing to do the job for money, you’ve entered that interaction tarnishing the respect they initially give you…and you will likely be shown that same lack of respect back.

I’ll ask you this…are you able to get your own vehicle safely into a lift, strong and able enough to safely remove the tire/wheel assembly, strong and able enough to get that assembly onto the machine, capable enough to properly remove the tire and then mount and balance the new tire (along with the nuance bits that it takes to accomplish that task), then strong and capable enough to get that assembly back onto the vehicle and torque to a safe and proper spec?

If you are unable and/or unwilling to perform a job, give respect to those that are.

I think his current tires are 6 yo.

If I was trying to be cheap I would have opted for the iron Man. Imove Gen 2 for 102

Made by cooper.
Walmart put these on my daughter’s Hyundai. So far so good. I’d have no issue grabbing these when on sale again for my kiddos beaters.

Ironman iMove Gen 2 A/S 205/55R16 91V

*On sale at Walmart for $60 each last summer*

These are cheap tires that seem to be OK. They are a division of Hercules Tires. Made globally-including by Copper in the U.S.

So I have my own tire machine and have been known to use used tires.

But my new tires have almost exclusively come from Walmart over the last 5-6 years. Before that, it was DTD and their super-sales. Walmart has the buying power and willpower to lead the tire market. Yes they have cheapo models in store but they can supply good stuff in a couple days through their good distribution network.

Tire busting is a job that's nearly the same everywhere, and hires from the same pool of people.

Yep - I’ve seen some of those on the road that looked like Toyo made them. Ironman is weird - they’re the “value” brand of Hercules Tire, which is now an importer vs. subsidiary when Cooper owned them.

This-over at Modern Tire Dealer they state second and third tier tires sale are through the roof. The reason(s) for this is obvious.
When I was getting the Pirellis installed, the new America’s Tire was getting their shipment in - nearly all of it was Sentury. The rest was a mix of Michelin, Conti and Bridgestone.

The Mohave brand was thought to be a Hankook/Kumho rebrand or by Omni United - nope. It’s made by Sentury now.

OK-this is GREAT!
Guys will not buy them because of their perception of the brand. But when they get on an aircraft they could be on the plane!

Established in 2009, our parent company Qingdao Sentury Tire Co., Ltd., is a global manufacturer of consumer, commercial, and aircraft tires, including the tires developed for the main landing gear of the Boeing 737-700, -800 and 900 aircrafts.

Oh man.
In Serbia in 90’s due to sanctions, company Tigar (now owned by Michelin) developed tire for MIG21. Before Yugoslav wars tires were supplied by Dunlop for that particular airplane. Turns out, Tigar had 70-% longer lifespan which is very important on MIG21 due to very high landing speeds.
At the same time, Tigar passenger tires were failing on regular vehicles where EC (EU at that time) banned them.

I have yet to see any instrumented testing (sponsored or not) showing Sentury tires to be capable of delivering competitive dry/wet performance when compared to Michelin/Continental.

I have returned with new tires! They ride very well, are nicely balanced and are very quiet. The tires handle very well and are not squishy or squirmy. Steering response is sharp. Braking is great. This is all on dry pavement, no rain here today. I did not get an alignment today. I have not gone over 65 mph but I will report if there is a balance issue at speeds over 65.

For Kira who has to know:

Time in 9:02 Time out 10:21

Arroyo tires 83.83 each 245/45/20 103W, $335.32
Mount and balance 18 x 4 $72
Disposal/shop/valve stem fees $16.60
NEW TPMS sensors, no brand specified on worksheet, 28.88 each $115.52
Tax 7.5% rate $ 39.21
Total OTD: $562.05

Not too bad. The guy doing it didn't say much. After the wheels went back on and were torqued the installer did several figure 8's in the parking lot fairly aggressively then came to a stop where another guy checked all of the lugnuts for proper torque again.

The TPMS light went out about a mile from the store.

Apart from when my car got held hostage at a Walmart TLE, I've had good luck with them.

I think because it's a better job than your average walmart stocking position, people aim to do better.

None of the cheaper tires are going to be competitive against them. That's a given.
