I'm sure many of us have a story like this with someone we know from both sides.

My best friend has a '94 Chevy Astro van with a 4.3L.
The guy has 146K mileaga and is far from a maintenance buff.
In fact he goes at least 8-9K on conventional oil,usually running a qt or more low.
Changed the coolant once etc.
.
Yet the van is still running strong without any oil related problems.
We love our vehicles and long to go with the best products for our engines and yet others don't give a schlit and get lucky.

I once worked at a oil change place. There was a guy who would come in once every week or so(about 4000mile OCIs) get a cheap bulk oil change and drive away. It was a Chevy Van with the 4.3L, it had 300,000 miles on it and the air filter housing was broken in two for as long as I saw it.

My friend's dad who was an airplane mechanic hasn't changed his oil in 45k miles and counting. It's a Ford Focus and nearing 100k. It drives my friend nuts, if he didn't live 500 miles away my friend would probably change it himself. It amazes me too how some cars still run.

But you are right. It could blow at any moment.

when i worked at ford there was an (of course) leased aerostar that came in with a seized engine. It had about 75000km's on it, ORIGINAL factory fill... needless to say it was full of some tar-gelatin-like substance which required the oil pan to be removed and said sibstance scooped out. i felt sick the rest of the day... how many other vehicles out there have such worn out engines and goopy oil that cant even burn out because its too greasy?!!
