Go Bengals

The playoff game was very good, except I thought the Bengals played too close to the edge of penalties (as usual). If the refs get tight on this game, you'll see more penalties than during the playoff game.
This could spell big trouble for the Bengals.

Can one of you explain how the sports betting in general works? I think the "house" aka bookie does not lose the money because he is essentially collecting the same amount from either side. The odds are adjusted in real time as the bets come in. For example, assume that odds of Bengals being the Big Game winner in September must have been astronomically high. If I had put a dollar and if I will get fifty if they win, that forty nine dollars is NOT coming from the bookie but the other folks who had bet on the other teams to win.

Do I have the concept right? I still do not quite understand the mechanics assuming odds change in real time.

I'm a Steelers fan too but I'm a little bit up in the air about this. How are you for me since I'm in the west. Really I just want a good game. We've had too many turkeys in the past.
I meant to say I would be for the Rams since I am in the west. Stupid spellcheck.

Vikas said above, "Can one of you explain how the sports betting in general works?"
...to their advantage
...apparently very well as they have the money (formerly your money) to by countless ads on TV and radio, servers and network service to operate and Heaven only knows how much for their "legislature lubrication fund".
...by capitalizing on losers who want to be James Bond.

I don’t know anything about football 🏈 lol. Everyone I know is saying Rams. I don’t know, we aren’t watching the game so whoever wins good game. For me watching football is like watching paint dry but if it’s for you then that’s fine. If it was the World Series then heck yeah I’d be rooting for a team lol. Never have watched a Super Bowl. I’ll probably be out shopping like usual.

Yes the overall concept is that the bookies want about the same amount bet on both sides. Then no matter which team wins, the money from the losing bets will pay off the winners with profit left over, since in the overall scheme winners don't get paid quite 2 for 1.

So the odds are adjusted in real time to sway bettors toward evening out the bets. The bookies aren't gambling on the game, because that's risky. They're gambling on the customers, which they know will act a certain way.

Ok, since my attempt at extortion didn't work, I took the Rams and gave up 4.5 points. The moneyline bet (no points, whoever wins period) paid only $1 for every $2 bet on the Rams and I couldn't put money on those odds.
So the Rams could win by up to 4 points over and I'd still lose. That would keep my 35 year streak alive. Well, not quite 35 years if you exclude the time they were in St. Louis. I'd never bet on a team from St. Louis.

Is there going to be a thread that is like a play by play ? Or this one?

I am presently driving but for me not watching the game or listen to it I will admit I'm just a slightest bit curious about what is obviously the biggest sporting event in the country tonight, so.. even if you do enjoy watching the game like a regular person because I have never claimed to be a normal person... if anyone feels like sharing a play-by-play or posting as the game goes either in this thread or in another one maybe that would add to the enjoyment of the game.

Although who wins either after it works tomorrow morning like everybody else but I'm just thinking out loud here.

Packers fan here (Wisconsin born and raised), so I really don’t have a dog in this fight… however… I’m going with Rams because I don’t care for Mixon (the incident where he punched a woman in the nose, breaking bones, etc., when he was the OU QB).

My oldest son read a bunch of books on that subject years ago. He came to the exact conclusion you have explained. Those bookies are NOT gambling. They are the HOUSE and the HOUSE always wins..

That’s basically it. The house loses at times but is a winner over larger sample sizes. Say I bet the Bengals +4. It was -115 so I have to bet $115 to win $100. Bet pays $215 since I get my original $115 back. If I took the Rams -4, it was -115 also, so the house keeps the juice (15% in this case) on either bet but can adjust that to encourage more betting on a particular side.

I took the Bengals +4 tonight. Go Bengals!
