GM's 4.2 liter Inline 6???

No GM designed it in house and it was the blind leading the blind if you ask me. They started on it some time ago as a replacement for the 4.3 and they planed on cutting it into smaller packages like the I5. It was an attempt at a modular design. The problem is they completly ignored what had been done before with regards, to GM,FORD and Chryslers I6's and then they also went and ignored TOyota's I6's that where used in their car's and the one they used in the Landcruiser. The minute I first saw the specifactions I laughed my but off in how weak it was and the power band being up so high! It was truly the blind deaf and dumb at work on that engine! THey total missed the mark for a good truck engine. That engine would be better suited to a car if you could give it a long hood line or turn it side ways?

I6's in my mind make the best truck engines but you have to go about it with some intellagence and it is clear that while they had plenty of engineeering they had no idea what a truck engine is and had even less common sense!

the motor sucks, plain and simple. GM has NO idea what they are doing. The 3.6 is a catastrophe too. Don't believe me? Ask a GM mechanic how many 3.6's have head gasket or cracked head failures...

Here it is. In a 1966 Nova wagon. Supposedly puts out ~1300hp w/ 20psig of boost:

Well neither does a 1300HP version of the engine being discussed with a turbo the size of a jet aircraft engine slapped to the side of it and running off a FAST system.

The discussion was focused around why the engine was a poor choice for a TRUCK or SUV and that it would have been better suited for a car. Fuel economy was also being discussed as a key issue.

I don't believe anybody stated that it couldn't make good power. And anything will make good power with a big enough turbo. Whether it stays together or not, well that's a topic for another time.

You posted a Unicorn, so I posted another one

Yeah but at least it's a 4.2L I6 Unicorn

. In reality that's what this engine wound up to be. Like said, It was only used in one chassis; the GM T360, the engine is no longer used in anything and perhaps wasn't the best choice for a truck to begin w/, although the T360 isn't *really* a truck. More of a people mover that can tow. It wasn't the best vehicle I ever owned, but it did give me some real-world experience w/ this engine/chassis. I don't think everyone in this thread can say that

I drive, and tow a 3,000 lb boat with an 07 Envoy. I think the engine is the best I've ever owned. It is fuel efficient! My previous vehicles were a 03 GMC Sierra 4wd with 5300, and 05 GMC Sierra 4wd with 5300. This engine definitely uses less fuel that the two trucks, and is smoother.I'm sorry to hear that some aren't happy, but I'm delighted. Oh yea, I think the 4.2 is the base engine in the Hummer H3.
