No GM designed it in house and it was the blind leading the blind if you ask me. They started on it some time ago as a replacement for the 4.3 and they planed on cutting it into smaller packages like the I5. It was an attempt at a modular design. The problem is they completly ignored what had been done before with regards, to GM,FORD and Chryslers I6's and then they also went and ignored TOyota's I6's that where used in their car's and the one they used in the Landcruiser. The minute I first saw the specifactions I laughed my but off in how weak it was and the power band being up so high! It was truly the blind deaf and dumb at work on that engine! THey total missed the mark for a good truck engine. That engine would be better suited to a car if you could give it a long hood line or turn it side ways?
I6's in my mind make the best truck engines but you have to go about it with some intellagence and it is clear that while they had plenty of engineeering they had no idea what a truck engine is and had even less common sense!
