Fair enough. Certainly didn’t know it was when the car was purchased.Any engine using a timing chain to drive the water pump is a no-go for me and anyone I care about.
What is your experience?sell it now while its fixed. these are nothing but a money pit.

If it is well cared for with frequent oil changes, it should do okay.sell it now while its fixed. these are nothing but a money pit.
That was my thought. It’s my mom’s car but charge the oil every 4-5k miles and it may use 1/2 to 1 quart max on a longer interval. Hoping they can get another few years out of it. It’s at 122k now.If it is well cared for with frequent oil changes, it should do okay.
2.4s cared for like my brother (when they have time) is when the 2.4 starts to burn oil pretty quick.
My neighbor has a 17 Equinox with almost 100k with only minor issues, but it is maintained to the T…..
It seems harsh to call the OP’s parents ‘uneducated’ simply because they purchased the vehicle being discussed.only the uneducated buy cars with this engine. plenty of threads on here about this turkey . dont believe me? do a search
And this is after they replaced the balance shaft tensioner that I suspected was extended due to improper procedure replacing water pump:
It may benefit from Valvoline Restore and Protect, not sure how great the piston oil control ring drainback holes are-my Vue is getting it in the spring.Have a '13 equinox I do maintenance on.. (about 50k miles on it now)
It has the 2.4L which uses 1qt per 1000-2000 miles.
but only gets driven <3000 miles a year so tolerable.
Usually gets 1 quart makeup and 1 oil change yearly.
I moved to 5w40 it reduced average consumption about 50% from the previous 700-1300miles per quart.
Otherwise its a surprisingly peppy around town vehicle. less annoying to drive than my 2017 cherokee with the 3.2 pentastar and the wonky 9-speed.
I’d like to hear how a bad chain can cause oil burning-but burning & low oil levels DEFINITELY cause chain failures! The 2.4’s biggest issues are the VVT, cam driven vacuum pump, and eventual direct injection/HPFP-all of them drastically affect timing chain wear.neighbors bought a brand new eqinox with same engine. at 27k it needed a timing chain! after this it started burning oil like a qt every 600-700 miles. at 60k it needed a second timing chain!. this engine is a known turd. only the uneducated buy cars with this engine. plenty of threads on here about this turkey . dont believe me? do a search

At the vehicle's current rate of use which seems to be going down. Four oil changes would be around 8,000 mi in 4 years. I think I'll just keep going with Castrol EDGE Euro a3b4 that I have a stack of in the basementIt may benefit from Valvoline Restore and Protect, not sure how great the piston oil control ring drainback holes are-my Vue is getting it in the spring.
