Owners manual says to use Dexron atf. I've only ever heard of 75w-90 gear oil being used in transfer cases. Is the atf correct in this application?

only some Japan made TCases use gear oils and have for years. GM has used ATF or Auto Track 2 fluid for well over twenty five years. Dexron 6 in lots and Auto Track fluid in auto style Tcases and it is differentiated by being Blue in color.

Ok, thanks. I've only had a Tacoma and a Tundra. Dads pickup is making a grinding/clicking noise coming from the front end in 4x4. Thinking about changing front/rear diff and t case. What is recommended for brand? Full synthetic? Is super tech fine?
I wonder if the thin fluid of atf doesn't last as long as gear oil. Now I don't know the mileages but I've seen a couple YouTube videos of tundras t case fluid being changed and practically no metal on the bolts magnet and oil looking brand new, looked like it didn't even need changing. I then watched a gmc change and it was covered in long shards and fluid black! Looked like a baseball bat covered in spikes

and the YouTuber casually said "clean the magnet, Incase you have pieces of metal"

If you like you can run a higher vis gear oil in your rear dif, but don't be thinking about putting gear oil in a transfer case designed for ATF.

Some folks use boutique gear oils. I think Super Tech is fine. Why not use a 75w90 Synthetic like GM suggests and if you are really towing heavy loads use a 75w110 or 75w140. I was wondering about the metal as well, but folks chimed in it was normal.

I'm not going to bother discussing use Dino over synthetic, but you'll find plenty of Dino fans out there. Not me.

Yep, that's a decades old new normal since emergence of FE low KV40C gear train oils ....... be it differentials/transmissions/Tcase etc, which I personally had been keeping away from.

Edit:Any wonder why modern day gear trains requires rebuilt, when humanity progresses from fixed-line dial telephone to IoT.

Starting with the new body style in 07 GM went to DEX VI. I just did it in my Silverado, took about 15 minutes to do. Use some white thread sealant on the bolts. The torque specs on the bolts are only 13-15 ft lbs.

I am using a 7cSt ATF in my AT2 transfer case in my Trailblazer. Co-op ATF SL. Group 4 multi vehicle ATF and it works great with the auto 4x4.

My old ram 1500 used ATF and my 3500 will get the same. Never had any issues.
