My understanding is that a manufacture can recomend an oil but, not require it unless their willing to give it free. In addition; a manufacture may not put an oil on their preferred list because" we have not tested it" So M1 could be on their oil to use list and originally PP was "not tested" and it is legal. Personally, I have little reservations believing that Mobil 1 is a better oil and the number of hi-end car makers using it as their factory fill leads credence to that assumption.
A nice plus for Pennzoil.
I guess it depends of the buyer of the dealership. Cadillac dealer in Laval use Mobil 1, one in montreal also use Mobil 1, the other 2 in montreal use castrol or Pennzoil. So I guess as long as it meets the spec 4718m, its up to the buyer's decision which brand goes in the dealer!
In the owner's manual, it doesn't say to use a particular brand as long as it meets the spec and viscosity.

Hello all, Long time lurker... First time poster.
Surprised this hasn't already been done... But I think it would be a good idea if someone could make a document/spreadsheet, listing all the major synthetics (could also be done for conventional oil) in one column, and all the major specs in other columns, with a checkmark if it is approved or not. Documentation of the spec on the company's website and/or actual bottle would be the requirement for the oil to receive the checkmark. I guess it could get complicated with all the grades... but I think it still could be done.
I think it would be good information, and would help a lot of people in deciding. I, after some research, now only use synthetic, but price IS still a consideration, along with meeting company specifications (for warranty purposes).

Some of you guys are hilarious. First no one you know has even seen a memo. Even if it does exist, how old is it? We all know for a time M1 WAS in short supply. It makes sense that GM would give their dealers a heads up and a quality alternative to M1 while M1 was in short supply. Geeezzz

Pennzoil Platinum has been GM 4718M approved and on the list for some time now.

The Wal-Mart in my town has maybe 3 or 4 quarts on the shelf.
Shelves are still fairly skimpy around here.
