Someone posted this on another forum I visit. I guess he got a memo at his dealer. With the shortage of Mobil 1 5w30. The memo states that GM has authorized the use of Pennzoil Platinum when Mobil 1 is not available.

Interesting....good replacement that is potentially better than the M1 factory fill 5w30.

I didn't think there was still a shortage? Or is XOM tweaking the oil so it now passes the Seq IVA test?

The amount of evidence that Exxon [censored] up is astounding. The number of people that keep their blinders on about the situation is even more astounding.

If I had a GM requiring 4718M, I'd have Pennzoil Platinum in there hands down.

As long as the oil meets GM 4718M, people can use whatever they want. If GM mandated Mobil 1, it would legally have to be free from the dealerships.

It's been my experience that people can ignore facts very easily. I don't know why. Maybe this was covered in Sociology while I was daydreaming. Make the facts known, and you risk being labelled a drama king or queen.

My understanding is that a manufacture can recomend an oil but, not require it unless their willing to give it free. In addition; a manufacture may not put an oil on their preferred list because" we have not tested it" So M1 could be on their oil to use list and originally PP was "not tested" and it is legal. Personally, I have little reservations believing that Mobil 1 is a better oil and the number of hi-end car makers using it as their factory fill leads credence to that assumption.

I guess it depends of the buyer of the dealership. Cadillac dealer in Laval use Mobil 1, one in montreal also use Mobil 1, the other 2 in montreal use castrol or Pennzoil. So I guess as long as it meets the spec 4718m, its up to the buyer's decision which brand goes in the dealer!

In the owner's manual, it doesn't say to use a particular brand as long as it meets the spec and viscosity.

Hello all, Long time lurker... First time poster.

Surprised this hasn't already been done... But I think it would be a good idea if someone could make a document/spreadsheet, listing all the major synthetics (could also be done for conventional oil) in one column, and all the major specs in other columns, with a checkmark if it is approved or not. Documentation of the spec on the company's website and/or actual bottle would be the requirement for the oil to receive the checkmark. I guess it could get complicated with all the grades... but I think it still could be done.

I think it would be good information, and would help a lot of people in deciding. I, after some research, now only use synthetic, but price IS still a consideration, along with meeting company specifications (for warranty purposes).

Just a thought...

Some of you guys are hilarious. First no one you know has even seen a memo. Even if it does exist, how old is it? We all know for a time M1 WAS in short supply. It makes sense that GM would give their dealers a heads up and a quality alternative to M1 while M1 was in short supply. Geeezzz

As I mentioned in another thread...if and when the companies drop M1 then you have something. Until then it is B S. With all the money that Pennzoil and Valvoline spend on advertising and in the past giving away their product, you think they could have bought off a car maker or two after proving M1 was junk. Hasn't happened yet. Hmmmmm

BTW I read on a blog, that was posted on another blog that someone heard from a friend that all your wifes are cheating on you and you all have a small p#$^s.

Get a grip..........

The shelves at my Walmart are still mostly bare of M1 but the numbers on the price tags keep going up while other companies are lowering.

Must cost a bit more to make the product actually meet minimum API specs.

Gee, I wonder why there's still a shortage...

Can't blame it on Katrina anymore! Maybe it's hurricane Synpower.

That is the problem. There is NO product.

Again, more B S and innuendo.

The stores in my area have plenty of M1 on their shelves as well as other brands. How many cases of M1 do you want?

BTW how much high priced oil do they stock for a town of 30,000?

So ExxonMobil created the hurricane that caused the shortage eh?

As soon as Exxon gets Mobil 1 back to meeting spec, the shelves will be full.
