I'd be selling that stock before it gets as valuable as the old GM stock.

The thing broken at GM is innovation and the carry-over management remains the problem.

Gasp! What the heck is going on over there?!?!?!? One has to wonder if they were sitting on all these recalls for years, and are now coming out with them when they got the $35M slap down from the Gov't.

Dont construe this as GM bashing because thats.not how.its.intended...but...how hard can it be to do things right the first time.round?
AND
When they consistently get it wrong, why do.people.continue to.purchase their product?

This might soon change.

People still bought toyotas when they had all their recall issues. I don't think people outside of gearheads like us pay much attention.

This is sad.
I do wonder how much of this is driven by popular hysteria and how much is really necessary?
This seems to be a horse that both Congress and certain agencies as well as some incorporated non-profits are happy to ride.
If GM products really were that bad over so many years, then how come so many of them are still running around and needing to be recalled?
I write all of the above as one who hasn't had a GM car in nearly three decades and I've never owned the stock nor even seriously thought about buying it.
GM seems to be the pile-on favorite of the week, like the bogus unintended acceleration hysteria that was visited upon Toyota, an echo of that which destroyed Audi sales in the US for years.

I think some of it is a bit too much. After all, they're recalling cars from 1997-that's 17 years ago.

While some of it is an over abundance of caution, a few things like ignition switches that can be turned off if the driver hits it with a knee (simple fix-don't hit it with a knee) seem to be downright silly.

Swore off GM after they refused to fix the 4T45E transmission in my 2007 HHR in mid 2008 and kept denying there was a problem. Lo and Behold a TSB for transmission solenoid came out after I traded it in on the Forester, that matched the exact symptoms mine had. 1-800-chevy or whatever it was kind of treated me rudely, too.

This is exactly the reaction that patient investors will inevitably profit on. Buy the stock at rock bottom when emotions run high, than sit on it for years. I don't think GM is doomed and there may be money to be made from this.

Take a look at Honda's record. They don't seem to get it right the first time either; 265 recalls on the Civic, 263 on the Accord. The 2001 Civic had 25 recalls issued. Why isn't this news and people swearing off Honda?

All customer service lines at car makers are rude, so GM is no different. Over 26 years, I've called BMW, Ford, Chrysler, and Chevy lines at various times. All tried to give me the runaround. Standard practice.

As for the recalls, I looked at the latest round, and its basically expanding the ignition module thing to many more old models. So what. There were some other very limited, very mundane recalls on the new list, like the power windows might stop working, etc. No big deal.

What we are seeing is a new quality push at GM that is healthy. For years they denied many possible recalls, and now they have let the floodgates through. The ignition switch problems are bad, yet not catastrophic in the big picture.

The presence of recalls means the car company owns up to its problems. Thats a good thing. Having to pay for the recalls, in that business atmosphere, means they are taking steps to prevent future design/inspection problems.
