Has anyone else seen the recent GM ad where a woman talks bout just having been laid off, but received a message from GM with a deal so good she couldn't afford not to buy?

Ended up with here having bought an 09 Saturn Vue.

I was pretty amazed by a commercial that condoned buying a new car with no job, but I've seen it now 3 times.

Anyone else? I'm trying to track down a link for it, but can't seem to find one...

It will be on youtube eventually. I haven't seen it. She lost her job, she's depressed, so spends money and buys a car to feel better about herself. I've seen the phenonomen.

I havnt seen the commercial but its hard to say without more info whether she made a bad choice.

Dont know if she is married and how much he makes. Maybe she went ahead and bought the car stepping down in payment so she could afford to be a stay at home mom. Maybe she has a quarter million in savings. Maybe she is taking this opportunity to start a new business and the Vue is well suited to it and uses less fuel and has a lower payment than her old vehicle.

I bought a new Corvette when I was between jobs (1996) because the deal was so good ($11,000 Off) and it gave me an oppotunity to put 7,000 miles on it touring the country since I didnt have other obligations. Before you ask I wrote a check and it didnt bounce and the tour was not funded by credit.

On one hand, I can see how they want to "connect" with the many people laid off recently. On the other hand, it's incredibly poor fiscally to buy a new car with no job.

Agreed, but let's not forget that fiscal responsibility hasn't been a GM strong point.. in fact GM Corp might give you that puppy-dog-head-tilt if you mentioned it to them

Remember a few years back an ad for laundry detergent blushing about a recent divorce leaves no time for drama, and the clothes come out clean the first time, so more time for other stuff.

GM is still for-profit, they should care about selling cars for GM 1st and the customers 2nd.

I know - but with our government's continuing interests in the company, it kinda looks like our own government condones irresponsible behavior.

How can a laid off person decide to get another car when most out of work people have trouble paying their mortgage ?

I have almost 2 years of my salary in the bank (liquid cash) and I would never consider buying a big ticket item if I were to get laid off tomorrow.

This is why America is in shambles...... just sign on the dotted line and worry about paying it later.

Agreed. So are drug dealers, so are mortgage brokers and, by extension, Fed.

If you flood the market by drugs you will have to give street dealers incentives and they pass their incentives to the end users. If you flood the market with liquid financial instruments you's need to do the same. The Great Consumer Generation got conditioned rather well. Dot com bubble was in reality the first liquidity bubble but no one in the Fed paid attention. Remember IPO, IPO,IPO?.. General Public does not know and most sadly does not want to know about difference between various financial instrument classe and risk/reward scenarios. To them it is all Money. The core of this great nation has changed. Shortcut took place of Effort and the public will give you 'money' for a shortcut without thinking at all.

Gene K, your situation was interesting. You got nothing but good memories out of that. My hat is off to you for your courage and values. Unfortunately it can hardly be replicated by a hundred million or so in the ad audience.

Its called money and I bought the same car as your name.

It's amazing that the only commercials I see from Toyota & Honda are when they are having their clearance events or introducing the new models for the first times and then those manufacturers go quiet in terms of marketing on TV and make it the whole year without having to give away the company or show how they're better than the competition...

Every second commercial seems to be a FORD/GM/Chrysler commercial all year long with some stupid event... "Winter Sales Event" or "Independence Day Event"

Hmmmm.

You haven't been following the news about Congress for the past 10 years, or the Executive branch for the past 22 or so months, have you?

LOL wallyuwl!

I thought about that after I posted - but I believe you know what I mean...

Gene K,

Stop comparing yourself to those poor idiots in line at a food bank talking on their iPhone, wearing nice clothes and jewlery hoping to get a loaf of bread, some cans of pork & beans and peanut butter/jelly.

A stupid commercial from GM doesn't sway my buying habits, especially when said stupid commercial appears to promote personal financial irresponsibility.

If a person needs a new car to feel good about themselves, they need something other than a new car... they need professional help.
