GL-4 ??

I did a search and nothing came up.

Where can I buy GL4 OTC? I am in San Diego and just hit 10K on my first new car and want to change the MT oil as soon as possible.

Even though GL5 is listed as an option in my manual, its contents are corrosive to the "yellow metals" in the tranny.

Older GL5 can be corrosive but the newer stuff is not. I tried GL5 in my tranny (dual spec as is yours) and didn't like the performance (notchy shifting).

I haven't looked in Advance or Auto Zone but I suspect that they would have some there. The Redline MT90 is good, as is the Amsoil MTG but those are mail order. Motul makes a good one as well.

I have some buddies with the same car as I and they reported notchy shifting and bad cold weather performance (grinding even when rev matching) with the GL5. The syn blends make it even worse.

I have looked at Pep Boys, Autozone, Worldwide Auto Parts, Kragen, NAPA, even the dealership (they only ofer GL5

) with no luck.

If I find it, do you think I should stock up? Is it going the way of the dinosaur?

The Redline MT90 seems to be the best choice, I just wish I could buy it OTC.

I've found GL-4 StaLube(?) at Napa in Sacramento. I've not seen it in any of the other 'popular' spots.

With Specialty Formulations moving and unavailable for now, your best options are Amsoil MTG or Redline MT-90(both GL-4), if your manual is specifying 75W-90. Both of these products are popular and easy to find.

heathen, GL4 specifies a type of additive package. Does the requirement say anything about the weight of the fluid?

You seem to be assuming a 90 weight gear oil.

There are a bunch of GL4 and GL5 gear oils that can be used.
I include GL5 because some are blended without LSD additives are others claim compatibility(dual rated). Usually this means that they either use a buffered additive or other more friendly additive package.

I tried digging up spec sheets on all the common names. If you can find a spec sheet for other brands, post the link.

Some of the more common names can be ordered at your auto parts store, found by using the oil distributor section of the yellow pages, or found at the local quick lube. The boutique oils can be found online, and at specialty places like euro, bike, marine, 4x4, speed or industrial supply shops.

Also on occasion seen it available in the boating section for outboards. mostly 80W-90.

But I always ordered MTL for $8 a quart vs. $20+ a quart from GM.

IIRC, John Browning used the Royal Purple fluid in his Camry with good results. As I remember is was dual rated.
