I have some buddies with the same car as I and they reported notchy shifting and bad cold weather performance (grinding even when rev matching) with the GL5. The syn blends make it even worse.
I have looked at Pep Boys, Autozone, Worldwide Auto Parts, Kragen, NAPA, even the dealership (they only ofer GL5
) with no luck.
If I find it, do you think I should stock up? Is it going the way of the dinosaur?
Below is a copy of the response I got back from Scion/Toyota:

Thank you for contacting Scion.
I apologize about the late response. I spoke with our tech dept regarding your situation. They recommend the GL-4 only because in the long run it will be less corrosive to the metal inside the transmission and it will allow for better mechanical output.
Please feel free to contact us should you have any further questions or comments. We would be happy to assist you. You may contact us directly at 1-866-70-SCION or by email at Contact Us.
Thank you for your interest in Scion.
