I haven't seen anything written about this, so I thought I'd let everyone know of the new specification that will be used for all motor oils in the future. ILSAC GF-5 is being drafted, and is expected to go into effect in 2010. According to Lubrizol's site, all PCMOs (not diesel) carrying the starburst will have to meet this spec.

What's really interesting is the proposed benefits of this new spec. Phos levels will remain unchanged from GF-4, but fuel economy, rust protection, emission protection, sludge prevention, piston deposit and seal compatibility will be improved or defined.

The ILSAC GF-5 performance upgrade will make Full Snythetic oils obsolete...sorry Amsoil dealers.

At least in the 5w-20/30 grades.

10w-xx will probobly be grp II+, or at least have great add packs.

The basestocks will not always be as good as what's available and the additive packages won't be maxed out performance-wise either. So there will still be room for improvement in both areas.

Make Synthetic Oils obsolete? It might make group II oils obsolete! It may be difficult to improve sludge resistance with an add pack.

There are plenty of cheap oils out there that claim to only meet API SL, such as the Autozone house brand.

Maybe in the future, oils like this will continue to exist.

I'm thinking they should leave SM/GF-4 alone and perhaps consider a 2-tier system like ACEA (A3/A5). Is GF-5 going to drive the costs of motor oil up? Will these new higher cost oils provide any significant benefit over the previous specification for the manufacturers OCI's that we use here in NA?

One area I'm concerned about is trying to increase fuel economy requirements further than GF-4. How far can one push fuel economy requirements before we end up with all 30 weight oils ~ 9.5 cSt -- just barely above a 20 weights? It would destroy the point of buying a 30 weight. When I buy a 5w30, I want to be jumping up to the next level of viscosity protection compared to a 20 weight. Increases in fuel economy are better met by going to smaller engines and using 20 weight oils. Not pushing 30 weight oils to be essentially 20 weights.

Sometimes these regulators have to be careful -- and assess carefully whether it is worthwhile to try and continue pushing certain specifications. And whether these new specifications are going to be a benefit cost/performance wise.

Not sure totally but they do mention that one reason is the increased demand for 0W-20 and that it can only be made with GrpIII oils. (Sure IV too)

So SYN IT IS it looks like!!!

According to that site, the NOACK volatility will remain unchanged (at 15%). This means the current Group II/II+ base oils used in SM/GF-4 should be sufficient for GF-5.

Stock up when the price is right fellas!

Do these GF-5 oils last 10-15K miles?

The GF-5 spec isn't out yet, so no oils are proven to pass it yet. I would assume based on the spec's intent that they will last longer. The spec is apparently designed to meet standards that will allow engines to be designed to perform more efficently. With Oil Life monitors, this should result in longer OCIs.
