Got my LNG magazine yeaterday and there's a good article on GF-5 oils. According to the article ILSAC/Oil Committee is expected to approve GF-5 oil in the third quarter of 2009 so licensing can gegin by API in July 2010 and should be on the streets in new model year cars in 2011.

The new test includes a new engine sequence test VID for fuel economy will replace the current VIB fuel economy test. It is expected to discern improvements that come from use of friction modifying additives as well as low viscosity oils. Also the Noack volatility limit will be set at 11 or 12 percent evaporative loss, versus the current 15 percent.

I'm sure as time goes by more info will come out about the new GF-5 standards. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up on the dates.

Yep, and the oil will be 0W-0 weight.

Seems like GF-5 will push Group II+ and Group III basestocks with NOACK and CCS viscosity.

It was said many times from people on here that the API is a bad organization. How so? Oils have become better, not worse.

It's funny how that works.....but really it's not API driving the bus. I have no real gripes about API other than the arbitrary limits and the license and formula fees. But the real need for improved oils didn't come out of thin air - there was a demand! The new standards are still a minimum!

I got to wonder if ILSAC should not get more of the credit for better oils than API.

Yes they want to drop the limit on phosphorous and instead use tests that actually measure how much the oil degrades the catalyst and 02 sensors. That's the real way to do it because a chemical limit doesn't gaurantee equal catalyst protection.

I like that, but then I think it would vary with how much oil the engine consumes and with some manufacturers allowing up to a quart in 1000 miles as normal, I don't know how this will work. But it is a step in the right direction.

Am I reading this correctly that they may lift phosphorus limits, i.e., allow higher phosphorus in GF-5 oils?

I had you in mind when I posted that, TallPaul, as I know you need your ZDDP fix or all isn't hunky dory in your universe.

Seriously it says, "Physical, bench, field and engine tests will be investigated as an alternative to simply limiting these chemicals, and a report is due to ILSAC/Oil by Jan 1, 2007."

I haven't seen anything yet that declared they were successful. And I wouldn't hold my breath, since if they do, it just might prevent them from lowering ZDDP any further as there was first talk of lowering Phosphorus limits from the current 0.08% for GF-4 to 0.05% for GF-5.
