GF-4... Is this true???

As Molekule has stated in the past and Johnny has recently above, ZDDP is a cheap AW additive and can be replaced by better additives or alternative addtives. Mobil emailed me this awhile ago about this issue after asking a similar question:

I am interested to see the differences in RP, when the GF-4 spec comes out. They will have to cut their sulfur content in half.

But will they really alter for the GF-4 spec? Neo continues to sell old specs (SJ/SH GF-2) for all their rated oils. Who knows with the redesign of packaging whether this will change, but those are the 'latest' Neo specs that i've seen.

There is a great article in the FEb issue of Automotive Engineering, about Lubricants, GF-4, ZDP and the problems they are facing making these new oils. The article interviews a guy from Infineum. I wish I could post the article here but I wanted to let ya'll know about it in case you come across it.

Some interesting points in the article have been discussed here already (see you do learn things on BITOG).

Brian Chriton says talks in the article that with all the demands being put on oil makers and additive suppliers for emissions, longer drains and protection, thicker oils and different additive balances are required. I thought that was interesting. He talks about ZDP and other new chemicals that are going to be developed. He also mentioned the problem that NEW fluids might not be compatible with older hardware.
