Something interesting about you? I am one of those people who would rather spend $300 on a tool than $5 on a burger. It's a bit difficult to explain, but to me, that $5 is gone after I eat the burger. But the $300 that I spend on the tool, well, I can use that tool at anytime. [/quote]

I spent 300 today on a torque wrench becuase snap-ons warranty doesnt cover intentional damage. and went to carl's jr to try the new BIG CARL 4 dollar burger!

both are well spent!!!

Dude, I know it was in fun, but if you put someone else's post up in quotes and then modify it, you should at least state that you have done so.

Something interesting about you? For several months I've been chelating mercury from the 18 mercury / amalgam fillings I had from about 1960 to 1986. For some people this can be a real problem. It may take me 1-2 years to do this.

Pet Peeves? Elderly drivers who really shouldn't be driving,

I'd rather see elderly drivers on the road than younger people talking on cell phones and oblivious to other motorists. The elders are out there doing the best they can to get around. The younger people on cell phones have the choice to put down their phone and be a good driver.

And very old people have the choice whether or not to be honest with themselves and realize that they're risking lives by driving.

FWIW, I dislike drivers both young and old. No discrimination. They are equally dangerous in different ways.

They should have an old/young lane and let them drive together and only in their lane. The old would curb the speeders in the young and both would make them defensive of each other.

Problem solved!

It's not surprising to me to see in this thread that many of you are in your 20s here.

30 years from now, I'd bet $$ you'll view older drivers differently and with more patience and respect. Wait until you're in your 60s and have to drive with so many impatient younger people talking on cell phones and acting like it's an emergency to get to a fast food place to buy a hamburger, and see how you like it. I hope cell phone use while driving will be outlawed by then.

Many young people on BITOG. They don't seem to like older drivers. They seem quite impatient.

Like I say, wait until you're in your late 50s and see how you feel. See how you feel when you become far sighted and have to wear glasses to drive per DMV eye test, when you have thinning salt & pepper hair and sleep wrinkles on your face. If you think you're exempt of these things, wait 20-30 years. I guarantee the day will come.

It's the STATE'S responsibility to determine a driver's ability to drive and keep their license, not the driver's. It's up to DMV to pull a license if necessary, and not up to anyone else to judge a driver.

If they are risking lives, it's probably because of young, impatient drivers that feel they have to drive at 55 in a 40 zone to get to a fast food place, or because they left for work 10 minutes late and have to speed to make up for lost time. This *now* generation is very impatient. Has to have everything NOW. No patience for older drivers. No time for them. Older drivers have poorer eyesight and take too long and they won't drive 40 in a 40 zone. Take their license away [after they've had it for 50 years] and let them take the bus - just because they don't drive 55 in a 40 zone.

The old people have JUST AS MUCH right to drive as you do. It's perfectly legal for them to drive 25 in a 40 zone if they feel better at this speed, and if you tailgate them for doing so, YOU are breaking the law - not them. It's SUPPOSED to be 1 car length back for every 10 MPH.

I have astigmatism so I have to wear glasses to drive at night so having to wear glasses is routine for me.

I nearly hit an old guy one time when he decided it was okay to cut across three lanes of oncoming traffic. If your vision is that bad that you can't judge distance then you're only endangering someone else's life in addition to yours.

As for the cosmetic signs of aging that you listed, they shouldn't have an affect on your driving.

That's right but by that time you'll most likely have a greater respect for older drivers, because they'll be similar to your own age.

You HAVE to be in control of your vehicle at all times. You can't blame an accident on some old person that pulled across 3 lanes. There are times when they *can* be in the wrong, but many times people ARE NOT in control of their vehicles and are fast to blame someone/something else.

You are old beyond your years, Lurch. You like to view things like this from the perspective of generational conflict.

My own grandfather, almost eighty, is a very good driver and can back a trailer in better than most people ever will. However, he knows that he cannot see in the dark as well as he did perhaps ten years ago and he is man enough to accept that things change. So, because he is a responsible man, he chooses not to drive at night any longer with the exception of an emergency. My grandmother had seizures due to medication she was taking two months ago. She did her research and saw that after a seizure, one should not drive until six months have passed without another incident. Her keys will stay on the shelf until four more months pass. It's not about outlawing old drivers or some kind of generational gap. It's about people being responsible for their actions. The elderly are no different from the kids in this respect. Neither of them will accept their limitations and act responsibly based on them.
I think we've had this discussion before.

Yeah, I guess I presumed how you felt about older drivers.

It's true that good or bad drivers can be any age.

And you dont seem to like younger people......period. Lighten up a little, you are only 58 years old. Some older drivers are quite trying to drive around, you know this yourself. I do agree with your statement that it is up to the DMV to judge who can and cannot drive, but some of our elderly have slipped through the cracks. If you cannot drive at least the speed limit in good weather conditions, due to being old, than you have some sort of health issue that needs to be corrected. If it cannot be corrected than you need to surrender your driving card. I certainly would hope that you do not expect the speed limit to be lowered just because it is hard for you to see.

I really, really hope that this is some sort of twisted humor. If an old codger pulls across 3 lanes of traffic and I T bone him, it is my fault because I should have been in control of my vehicle? Your kidding! Your views seem to be biased toward the elderly.

I certainly understand explaining your views, and experiences once you have reached the AARP age, but suggesting that an accident clearly caused by someone who has no business behind the wheel of an automobile is the fault of someone involved who very well may have been doing what they are supposed to do is insane. NEWS FLASH SIR, not everyone below the age of 58 talks on a cell phone while driving, and guess what else, OLD PEOPLE HAVE LEARNED THE NEWFANGLED DEVICE AND USE IT WHILE DRIVING AS WELL.

I am not sure of your situation in life, but reading these comments combined with that thread about your steering wheel a while back have me wondering about you.

Yes but they can drive any speed they want to drive. Just because the speed LIMIT is 40 does *not* mean drivers HAVE to drive 40. That's the speed LIMIT, or is supposed to be. I'd bet $$ a driver can drive 25 in a 40 zone and it's legal, so try to keep your shirt on if you meet up with a driver like this.

If you see a driver you think is bad, write down the plate # and report them, and let the cops deal with them if they determine them to be a bad driver.

I'm just saying that many drivers do not have their car under control at all times yet they'll do anything they can to blame another driver in the event of an accident. They buckle themselves in, say their prayers, and hope the airbags deploy if needed. Ever heard "watch out for the other guy"?

Wonder about me all you want. I couldn't care less. You don't know me from Adam, and if you think you do, you really haven't a clue.

If you don't feel comfortable keeping up to traffic, please stay in the right lane and out of congested places at peak traffic times. Also be attentive to the light turning green and allow the people behind you to get through it too.

Note, if you let slower people change lanes, they may be less inclined to get into the left lane 3 miles back from where they are turning.
