Getting the most money from insurance adjuster?

So someone drove into the front left side of my 2002 Honda accord while at the toll booths. The insurance adjuster is going to come out and say how much he will give for the repair. How do I get the most money for repairs and make sure he does not skimp me on the little things that add up or may be hidden behind the damaged area?

Don't ever bring it to the incs. approved body shop.

I always leave the car at the shop of my choice. Let the adjust meet with your guy@ the body shop. They will know what is the best to get a proper repair...

I would first get a body shop of your choice and bring your car there. If you don't already have a body shop that you know is good, phone them up and ask if they're good at handling insurance.

A good body shop knows how to handle the insurance man and take that off your plate. You can go to a more high-end body shop, especially if someone else is paying and not you.

Let the body shop rep be your advocate do the negotiating. It's in their self-interest to be on your side to get a bigger work order.

Two times the insurance adjuster said that the body shop missed something, and they gave more for the repair.

I have not had an insurance company beat me up on repairs, but I don't deal with a junk insurance company either.

It works different in NJ. You can just bring it to a insurance approved body shop and the body shop does the estimate and fixes your car. They work it out with the insurance company.

I've also dealt with the insurance company directly, got the settlement check and then pocketed it and drove around with a dent for a year.

I spent one whole year trying to get repairs done correctly for a major accident, where some lady made a left out of her neighborhood, directly into my car. I ended up trading the car in and taking a huge hit, since I had so much going on, that I had no more patience for yet another trip to the body shop or call to USAA to complain. After they fixed a few final things, I dumped it and bought my Forester.

I will ONLY ever use the few shops around here that have good rep's from coworkers.

I always have my body shop guy handle it. He know the shtick...just find a good shop and stick with them.

I have 3 daughters...so the people in the shop know me by name.

When I totaled our Isuzu Trooper (I was at fault and USAA was the insurance company), I showed the adjuster receipts for maintenance that I recently had completed (timing belt, water pump and tires) and he adjusted the totaled price. To answer your question, I guess I would say, have your maintenance records handy and see if it makes any difference for your situation.

I had some parking lot sideswipe damage last year from a hit and run that included two doors and a lower rocker. Went to the insurance company's approved local body shop (no adjuster) and it seemed a little too simple to me. I then took it to a higher end shop who has done good work for the past 20 years. They said the first shop could not possibly do a proper and thorough repair with their stated method. The final repair actually ran about 75% higher than the first shop ($1325 vs. $750). They ran everything through the insurance company via photos and got everything approved. I didn't have to do anything. They said they do this all the time. My insurance company is one of the top rated in the world. Maybe they need to step up a bit on their body shops.

While you might not deal with junk insurance, seems like you're dealing with junk body shops if they keep missing things... just saying...

So the idea is to possibly repair the car myself with junkyard parts and then keep the red of the money. Basically everything that needs to be replaced is bolt on and the stuff that is a little bent isn't major or structural. Do I still bring it to a body shop even if I want to fix it. Front bumper, left front fender, and headlight are the major things that need replacement.

I would at least get a quote or two, so you have an idea of what you should get for the damage.

Most body shops give free estimates, so there's certainly no harm in getting a couple. However, with that type of damage on a 13 year old car I'd say there's a good possibility they will just consider it totaled.

If the adjuster can't see the damage, it isn't making it to his quote/payout. Once the body shop tears it down, they'll call for a supplement.

The few times i had insurance claims they went good make sure your body shop knows that you don't want to hear anything about any out of pocket expenses i always got my body shop to work with me.. If they don't want to play ball call off the game and get another shop.

Yea if you're worried about getting the most from your adjuster you may end up with a total. Thats what happened with my last accident. They quoted me $4k which was 75% of the little Saturn's value. I ended up buying my vehicle back as a salvage and getting it repaired for $2k. I've never seen an insurance company take the cheap route.

I always get an estimate from a good shop first, they do more blending than an insurance company claims you need. Then I argue about blending paint with the adjuster.

Fighting with insurance companies can be fun. And by fun and I mean, long, heated, and arduous. I'm assuming you must want to pocket the money, don't try to be clever and get your car totaled. You want it written just under total out, a body shop will usually do that for you. The insurance adjuster usually won't.

Getting the MOST can be really tough. I found out a good way to max $ the hard way after I got hit by someone 100% at fault (Mexican with no license working for a landscaper) and as soon as their insurer (State Farm) found out I didn't have collision they tried to sue my insurance company and refused to pay me anything. Despite my state police report and a written statement from a indifferent witness. Anyway, what you can do is get your own estimate from a very good shop. Get another from a different very good shop. Only accept an average of those two estimates. If the people you are working with are polite and courteous I would be flexible and allow them to average their estimate with one of my own. If you get a real jerk then gear up to make this tough for them.

If they say no to your averaging then tell them that is fine, you will be filing in small claims court against the driver. They might cave. In an instance similar to yours State Farm did not work with me and the rep was a massive tool from the beginning. I filed in small claims court. Months later they tried to negotiate ahead of the hearing. It was different person now, the tool was promoted (no joke). I told them there was nothing to negotiate and that at this point I would get satisfaction from making them pay even more for a lawyer to show up for a case I knew I would win.

State Farm called a few days before our date and told me I could pick my check up for the amount I wanted at a lawyers office. I went and the lawyer asked me to come out of the waiting area and into his office. I walked to the doorway, he said have a seat and I declined. He said he wanted to talk about my payment. I said there was nothing to talk about. He tried to get me to meet them in the middle of our estimates. So I laughed at him and walked back to waiting area, where people were. He took the bait and followed me out, he would end up regretting this as I purposely went nuclear on him in front of the people waiting. In between cursing at him I told the others about my trail of tears to get made whole and how this scum lawyer and State Farm continually tried to screw me of the repair costs. It did not take very long before he was yelling back OK!OK! I'll get your check! I got a check for something like $100 under the total value of my car. I didn't fix it, and I still drive it 9 years later.

Make them mail your check.

You might get a lowball check in the mail, tomorrow! Read the fine print on the endorsement part, you're signing your rights away.

A lot of body shops "direct bill" insurance, so you'd never see a check, if that's how you want to roll.

we need to hang out! This is the kind of stuff I live for
