getting a dead power window down.

Hey I have a Saturn and after reading on the forum I think I can get the inner and outer door skins off in order to access the window motor and regulator. But first (from the videos I've watched) the window must be halfway down in order to pull it out and gain access to the motor and regulator.

How is this possible if the motor/regulator is dead/stuck in the up position?


I knew this was going to happen sooner or later. I've had four cars with power windows and every single one of them has given me problems. On the other side, I've had 4 cars with roll-up windwos and never had a problem with them. Its like paying more to get less.

The more plumbing there is the easier it is to clog up the pipes.

Never messed with a Saturn. But when power windows have died on assorted GM vehicles that I've owned, a quick door slam would usually revive them for a little while... maybe a day or so.

If you can get the door skin off, you may be able to manually pull the window arm down if you've investigated other issues like a blown fuse, bad relay, etc.

Get the outer door skin off and the world is your oyster. In the event it's a wiring fault you can (and should) check this out when in there: unplug the motor and try jumpering 12v straight to it.

Also try rocking the window fore and aft, the tracks like to jam with the windows cocked funny.

+1 of all the power windows problems I have fixed it's usually bad switches or broken wires in between the door and the frame.

you can't get to it by removing the inside trim panel???

Pull trim. try to apply 12V to the motor itself to jump it up or down. if the motor itself is toast, you'll have to finagle.... no other way around it that I know of... unbolt tracks, unbolt the regulator...

lotsa knuckle scrapes....

On those cars its quite easy to just remove both.

Once the door panel and sheet plastic seal are off, you can take things off to get the window down.
At this point,you might as well fix the problem, too!

Removing the plastic outer door skin means you don't have to cut that plastic vapor barrier, or try to reshape/replace those "christmas trees" which invariably leads to rattles.

I cannot stress how easily the outer skin comes off on these, comparatively speaking, and how much "guts" of the power windows you can access. Just be careful around the rearview mirror.
