Did my first bike commute to work today. Started out at 5:45am arrived at 6:35. 50 minutes for my first attempt at a 9.5 mile commute. Nice to say good morning to people you see along the way.

Return took exactly 60 minutes because of 90deg temp, fatigue from this morning, and a longer route to avoid traffic.

I enjoyed it. Feels great! I can easily get both commutes down to under 40min each. So 80 min of great exercise or 40 minutes of drive time and try to squeeze in an hour at the gym. No gas cost either.

I'm driving tomorrow because I'm not ready to deal with rain. Give me a few weeks....

For me, it would be 12 miles in Miami heat and humidity. I'd do it if we only had showers at work.

Got showers at work. That does help a lot.

With our humidity, swampy 7-9am feels worse than noon time sun and heat.

Hey, I drive a stick-shift...it's almost like rowing to work if you think about it real hard.

I commuted to work by bike for years...one of my favorite things about doing so was getting to work energized, ready to work and seeing everybody crawling around, clutching their coffee and still wiping the sleep out of thier eyes...BUT dont talk to me as sson as I jump off my bike, let me catch my breath and compose myself.

Couple of tips, carry a backpack, wear a wife beater with your work shirt in the bag...carry some deoderant and POWDER. Powder works great if you dont have a shower available(and who does?)

A 10 mile commute? Thats a bit much if youre not a regular cyclist with a bit of endurance already...I mean 20 miles a day? I guess if you had a road bike it wouldnt be soooo bad, but with wider tires would be a little much.

If my commute was short I'd do it. although getting to work full of sweat would stink.

My 40 mile commute would be kind of hard though, especially in winter.

I used to always ride my bike to school when I lived in Ann Arbor, MI and Urbana, IL. Three miles and nice roads made for a good ride on a dry day.

I too have 9.5 mile commute to my job in suburban Detroit. If I had a decent path instead of a gravel shoulder and crazy traffic, I too would consider riding to work. It would be ideal to snake through residential neighborhoods while commuting, but I don't have that luxury.

I used to ride my bike in all types of weather when we had one car. Now with 2 cars, I am not motivated enough to ride when it's cold and dark out and I'm tired. Bike or car ... bike or car - it was often the car.

But I'd really like to start again. 9.5 miles is a good distance btw.

My commute is 10 miles and I have thought of biking to work. I don't think i'll ever do it, though, because even though we have showers at work, half the distance does not have a sidewalk. I would be crazy to ride on the road - we just had another biker die in Indy yesterday. He got hit by a sheriff's van.

My office is 18.5 miles from home. About four of those miles are along the road and the rest is along dedicated paths. I rade some last year, but not this year. It takes me about 1 hr 28 min to make the ride in the morning. Luckily, we have a shower in the building.

GREAT JOB!!!

I would LOVE to do it myself, but I get to station at 6am, and would have to leave at about midnight the night before for my 60 mile one way commute, which the first 10 miles is mountains, then the rest is suicide interstate.

I'll just keep doing about 5 miles on the station bike set at highest level.
