German Castrol vs. new GF-5, SN rated oils...

Honestly, I like to understand how necessary it is now that an oil be 3.5 HTHS, my gut feeling says for most gasoline powered euro cars in Snow-Belt region of US and Dominion of Canada its an over kill...

The reason I say this, my next door neighbhour has a VW R32 (V6 engine) he uses Mobil 1 Extended Performance 5w30 (his car is out of warranty now)!

But the point is the engine runs like a dream, oil does not burns, no ticking sounds from engine, not any noticeable buildup on the dipping stick...

Whats the problem? he is getting little better fuel mileage due to not using a specified oil by the manufacturer...

I messaged few senior members on BITOG, regarding this, I am not sure if is still necessary at this moment in time when we have oils such as Red LineI, SSO & Red Line 5w30 that we still religiously use 40 grade in Entry/mid Level Euro car engines! (especially if they are 5 or more years old)

Please help me understand why am I in the wrong...

I'm wondering how it would compare to the latest spec "GF-5" and "SN" rated oils?

Anyone have any ideas?

Go with Mobil 1

The Castrol Edge (& Professional)and Magnatec ranges are great and very reliable products

There has been speculation that Castrol Edge 0w30 sold in Europe is actually Castrol Syntec 0w30 sold in the US. Has anybody confirmed this or have any "insider knowledge"?

Well, we haven't had a VOA done on this Castrol Edge 0w-30; however its specs appear to be identical to Castrol SLX LongTec. LongTec was the old name of Edge 0w-30. And we have VOAs showing that the add pack of LongTec was more or less identical to gold GC. So, that may serve as some indication that these oils are basically the same as GC, although we can't be 100% certain.
