Ok fellas I've read on here the LS motors really like the GC 0w30. I've got a 5.3 LS motor that spins up to 6300rpm on a 150 shot. Please give me your input on weather this oil is the best choice for me(live on the GA FL line, get's kind of warm in the summer).

But on to the real meaning of this thread. I went to AutoZone and purchased 6qts of the GC 0w30 but they only they had four bottles that I've seen everyone run and the rest were the new ones labeled "Edge" with SPT.

Are these two the exact same formulas that I can use together or do I need to locate two more "older" bottles? I know it says "New Name" but I just want to be a 100% sure before I take any action.

The back of the bottle tells the real story. They split the Edge line into two with the old Syntec becoming Edge with SPT and keeping the same formulation as far as I know. If all the certs on the back of the bottle are the same, the oil will be the same within batch to batch blending tolerances.

A few years back GC was all the rage here. That was the "green" stuff (later replaced with the "gold"). As everyone here thought the "green" was superior, I decided to get as much as I could when Auto Zone had it for $3.99/quart. I drove around and hit every AZ in Detroit (the suburban stores had already sold out of the green). Mind you I'd ONLY buy the green stuff that was left on the shelf. When I was done (I believe there were 7 or 8 stores in the city at the time...probably less now for obvious reasons) I had enough of the stuff to last for 4 years (used it in the PT Cruiser until I ran out). Now I'm hitting all the Wal Marts I see and snapping up the clearance shelf PU. It's a sickness I guess...

As far as I know, the specs are still the same which would lead me to believe that this latest reincarnation was just a label change; however, we haven't had anyone do a VOA recently to confirm.

Even if Castrol slightly tweaked the formula, you can still mix them together without any issues, IMO.

I've not seen any evidence much about it has changed except the color. Blend and use with confidence IMO.

The formulation (or at least the add pack) has changed when the color was changed, but that was some 8-10 years ago. The latest change in the bottle label that the OP posted did not include color change.

I had a bunch of the green 0w30 I got from a neighbor and traded it for some Mobil 1. I still don't get the green oil hype.

In the UK a lot of the Magnatec and Edge got a re formulation early or mid 2012.

So could it be a change to SN. Or ACEA but the 2010 spec not the 2008 as companies can no longer sell their product as conforming to 08. In saying that some blenders in the UK are still using ACEA 04 on their labels.

I just bought some on the last AAP BOGO sale and it was still SL, presumably due to the higher ZDDP levels. Manufacture date was June of 2012, I'm sure there is newer stuff than that floating around.

I'm running no cats and a healthy cam. Are the ZDDP level in this GC high enough to suit my setup?

Both bottles say "Made in Germany" and both oils have SL rating. It's the same stuff.

If you're still running a roller cam, it has enough zddp.

German Castrol has been replaced as the "darling oil" on BITOG by Mobil 1 0w40. You could consider that if you want to go even thicker.

Think I'll just give the GC a shot since I've already purchased it. What's the top synthetic filters out there? Was thinking about going with the NAPA Platinum oil filter. I've always ran NAPA Gold but figured I'd run the best thing out there.

Who knows how long we are going to continue to see the 0w30 GC now that 0w40 BC is here.
I considered the 0w40 while the AAP promo was running, but got bitten by the DELO bug.
The XJ loves the 15w40 with the FL-1A.

I'm going to guess its due to packaging and the term synthetic.

I would say that it is labeled with superseded certifications and as a synthetic, so it would run into issues in the EU. Earlier in the thread was a note saying that the UK oil was reblended in 2012 due to ACEA and the old stuff could not be continued in production for sale.
