It could still be piston slap. Piston slap doesn't always go away when the engine gets hot. The pistons used nowadays probably don't expand much. What doesn't make sense is that the noise gets louder when the engine warms up because piston noise usually gets quieter with warm up if I'm not mistaken, but so does valvetrain noise tend to get quieter with warm up. Hmm

I'm not sure why it would take 10 secs or however long and the oil pressure would shoot up? did it shoot up above normal? then maybe you had a lifter feed restriction (and oil bleeds out of lifters quicker than being filed theory).

Noise sounds like its coming from bottom end of engine area. Did the usual flexplate crack check, torque converter bolts, looked for metal shavings in old oil. One shop says wrist pin, other says change oil back to conventional and get new motor mounts. I'm having a real time with this car lol.


Sounds like maybe piston noise. It's hard to say. It's hard to imagine your engine would be dirty or sludgy to clog lifters though.

What I might do is run some Marvel Mystery oil for a little bit and dump this oil and filter. Or maybe just dump this oil and filter and fill with some MMO in place of a quart of oil. Either way I think I would change the oil and filter to be on the safe side.

When I cranked it up after changing the oil the ticking/clatter was louder than Id ever heard before. It alarmed me. It was probably more like 5 seconds and I saw the pressure gauge go from 0 to 45. Ive heard engines make a little noise while they build pressure after an oil change.

It was right after this happened I took it on a drive and noticed the tick coming from the engine. Im going to change oil and filter again and see if it helps.\

Sounds like a good plan. I really like pureone's but I am concerned about the grippy texture getting into the filter's clean side from pics I've seen on here. Well hope you keep this thread updated.

Yeah they seem like decent filters. I've used Mobil filters before this. I think I'm going to use a Wix oil filter with some Pennzoil Platinum 5w30.

Lots of guys seem to like Wix here. I like the Bosch filter at Autozone. My understanding it the same as a Pureone but with a regular painted black shell and the same price. Other than that I wouldn't hesistate using an ACDelco even an ecore one. I like and use Pennzoil and QS.

fill that filter, the General gave us a straight up mount

i'd go back to conventional 10w30 and try the MMO, the results either way would make a great thread no doubt. then try adding 6-8oz of Schaeffers 132 EP to your next change its great stuff

Interesting, I have the same car, same year, same engine, nearly same mileage. I run-currently-YB 10W30. Just this last year the LT1 developed a lifter tic on startup. I added a bottle of MMO and it about cut the noise time in half. These engines are not noted for piston slap like the LS1s are. The noise you are hearing is odd for this engine.

I have an LT-1 in the 95 Corvette 57K miles. These engines generally sound like sewing machines-they are not super quiet. Recently I've been chasing a 3 to 4 second valve tick on start up. Oil is Amsoil 5-30 full synthetic. Tried AC Delco, Mobil 1, and Fram TG filters. The TG reduced the start up noise the most out of the filters I've tried. Then I added a pint, then 400 miles later another pint of MMO and it is much quieter--lost about 4 psi on the hot idle oil pressure down to about 18 psi at 700 rpm. This car sits in the garage most of it's life so the next O/C is due in Feb. Then the Pennzoil Platinum 5w30 goes in with a Pure One OF

I have never run into this issue in any of my LT-1's. Plenty of noisey LSX motors (piston design) but never with the LTX. My last LT-1 ran a steady diet of Red Line 10w-40. Never any objectionable noises. Very smooth.

As others have stated, go back to the oil you had been using. If this does not help, pick a oil additive MMO,ARX,Neutra and treat it. Maybe you have some junk in a roller lifter? Worth a shot.

Good idea. Try 2-3 4-5000 mile runs with PP.

Go back to Pennzoil conventional. Imo,synthetic oil is just a gimmick. Too many issues with it as opposed to dino,plus it`s expensive. It works impeccably well in gears,but in engines you never read about any issues with dino. But like I said,it`s just my opinion. Everyone I talk to who owns a GM LS V8 always had noise with synths,and went back to dino never to have engine noise ever again.
