This is the most power they have had at a "plate track" since plates were introduced. With the .922" spacer restricting the engines to about 550hp it is around 100hp more than the plate engines had. NASCAR added an inch to the 8" spoiler after a post-Daytona 500 test. After the first practice on Friday, NASCAR had the teams add a 1" wicker bell 90 degrees to the existing spoiler.

This is a bunch of nothing. I'm not seeing any results from this supposed, "power increase". Qualifying speeds are no better. Top guys are in the low 190 MPH range. With most falling in behind that. In fact, half the field is anywhere from 189 MPH to barely 180 MPH.

NASCAR is famous for this. They'll give them a bit more power, and tease the fans in the process. Then they'll rob it right back with a bigger spoiler, along with other aero changes that slow the cars right back down.

They might touch 200 MPH today, running in a pack. But they've always done that. This is nothing more than another desperate attempt by NASCAR, to try to get a few more people in the stands. And it's most likely, just like all the rest of their nonsense, a move in the wrong direction. In order to try and salvage a dying venue they themselves train wrecked in the first place. In the 70's and 80's the Super Speedways were sold out months in advance. Look into the stands at today's race. It will tell you all you need to know. And a thicker, cone shaped restrictor plate isn't going to fix it.

Remember, the pole speed at the 1969 Talladega 500, (50 years ago), was 196.386 MPH. And that was in a factory framed car. Today it's barely 192.

The real stupid part of this whole deal at Talladega this weekend Is that this new aero package was never tested till they got on the track on Friday. The fastest track on the schedule and they bring an untested car to the track.
The powers to be in NASCAR don't really have a clue what's going on I believe.

Car 62 Gaughan, to the back for a driver change. Tyler Reddick qualified the car while Brendad Gaughan went home to Las Vegas for his son's First Communion.

Big one, 43 tried pushing the 12 and ended up spinning in front of the field. 4, 14, 34, 43, 36, 12. The 36 has the splitter of what looks like the 34 stuck in its nose.
