This has about 9-10 backlash. Should it be a bit closer to the toe(peak of the gear)

Very similar.
It seems be ok according the the diagrams, I haven't done many though.
These are old gears BTW.

Textbook perfect, as long as it looks like this the whole way around the ring. Clean her up & fill her up.

Yeah, I just tried it in 4 places, same. BL varies by less than .001.

Are you using the wrong oil or was it not changed for more than about 50K miles ??

Looks like a type of burnt on oil Mayo was in use and I've seen that before in older gearboxes that were not well maintained. Less of a chance it's just a cheap Castrol box oil with the wrong GL specs and a box that has some Yellow metal bearings (A type of brassy bronze steel used in older high quality gearbox bearings, that will last until the next ice age).

Wowwwwww. It's a paint applied to the ring gear so you can check the wipe pattern and set backlash.

You really are out of your depth, aren't you?

Thanks for the replies, gents!

Yeah, amazingly the gears looked almost new when I took them out and cleaned them up. about 160K miles. Less than .001 runout for gears and old carrier.

Must have been made on a Monday. I will definitely sell them when its time to move on with the truck. 4.10 gears for that milkwagon!

Fluid Changed at 100K with 80-90W val synblend. BL was 12 when I took it out, 10 when it went back. Factory shims were almost equal.

A new carbon clutch trac lok was installed. Someone is buying my open to be welded and used offroad.
Installing val synpower 75W-140 with LS additive, nothing else. I called Valvoline and they said not necessary to add anything. Got it real cheap at pep boys over black friday, like 8$ a bottle.

I gave the carrier into a place and they installed the side bearings with massive heat, I got back blue/bronze bearings.
This is after requesting pressing in. I ended up getting new installing myself, needed the race anyway from the toasty ones. You never know what a shop does with your car. He said he would warranty the bearings a year but I doubt they would have more life than that....At least it was a few bucks.

Just have to clean up the rusty parking brakes, install new, oh, bearings and seals too! and fill her up!

Now Ultrafan has me concerned if I should thoroughly clean off that stuff!

OOOPS! I've got my reading glasses on now and can see it's paint not oil residue.

I've overhauled a number of older manual boxes and have inspected the insides of a lot of more modern mostly dual clutch auto boxes, but this is the first time I've seen a yellow marker paint used.
I thought they only used such paints during R & D.

And... it's typically used in what component?

When checking backlash while setting up a differential ring and pinion. Some people clean it off, most just leave it there. For pinion depth you just use a setup tool and a bar through the diff housing.
