What's the deal with GDI engines? I see Valvoline developed a synthetic - formulated specifically for GDI.

Do a search for GDI topics on BITOG. There is an endless series of threads about the problems GDI poses for engine oils.

Wow I read up on the GDI issues that sure is something.

I've always used quality synthetic oil and filter and big time believer in every 3-5k using chevron with techron especially when I do an oil change. Nothing is 100% but I am sure that little bit helps out.

Thankfully my car is a lease. But I'll still treat it as I own it

For me, having the gdi ( IS not the RX) is an extra maintenance item. Tear down of about 20 min, soak of a couple hours, reassemble of another 20 or so. Doesn't even cost 20 bucks to do. No biggie, especially at 20-30k intervals.

And I see TGDI as 0w-20 versus 5w-20 /30.

I will take that coin and use it to add an auxiliary 4 port add-on injection system to my current DI only system, and a tune instead.
