Here is another one with over 10,000 mi on GC with fairly high TBN.

vad,

You thought the Esso 0w30 oil analysis was an 'ANOMALY' because of all of miles in such a short time,
well, the link you posted above of the GC having a good TBN after 10,000 miles of use was a ANOMALY to,
that engine had a 7 quart oil pan, not quite you average oil sump size, plus this guy also had to add extra oil to the GC during the OCI, and he thinks this boosted the TBN of the GC.

XD-3 = Not available in the USA.

GC does so well in this engine, I'd like to see you run the XD-3 and post a used oil analysis for comparison.

I wish I had done more testing on XD3 but it was becoming quite expensive and I was doing it to try and save money with extended drains. The 2 used oil analysis I had were representative of the type of driving my cars do so I was happy with the results. I chose an OCI based on those results and have stuck with it for the past year or so. No issues have come up and I'm saving a ton of time and money. My current OCI's are:

40,000km hiway driving with a bypass filter
20,000km hiway driving without a bypass filter
15,000km city driving without a bypass filter

I consider these intervals to be quite conservative. 10k miles should be do-able in all but the most extreme hot or dusty conditions.

It's not an average engine. I agree.
But have you noticed that there is quite a few of the average to small motors delievering the comparable results.
You can not say the same about the XD-3.

If this oil is such a winner why don't you guys run it longer and show us the great reports.
Untill then the superiority claim will still remain a mute point.

I plan on going to a 12-month OCI on Esso XD3 when I'm finished the AutoRX clean and rinse. However, I expect I will only put on 5,000 to 6,000 mostly highway miles during that time. Would it be safe to extend the OCI longer than 12 months on my 95 Nissan Maxima, just approaching 60K, mostly highway miles?

What is with the hostility?

We have already shown you some great results are stated above plus here is another.

Why are you even arguing with us? You cannot even buy this stuff where you are yet you are saying we are somehow wrong with saying this is a good long term oil with great TBN retention.

They typically can't. Everywhere in Canada, IIRC, is regarded as SEVERE service. You don't see many extended drains in Omaha, NB or Billings, MT ..or "something" Falls, ND (SD?). Normal driving there isn't "normal". Therefore only the most obscure and unique driving situations are available for extended drains. Olympic is one such individual that can actually use XOCI ..and he indeed uses this stuff.

Take a trip to Canada, buy some XD-3 in whatever flavor that you like, bring it home. Use it. Do a used oil analysis. Show us the results. That's what anyone living in the USA will have to do. They will also probably have to live in the mid to lower half of the nation, and commute a decent amount to accumulate enough mileage in a short enough time to be considered an extended drain. Not everyone here is a frequent flyer. In fact many here are retired or semi-retired and no longer drive the mega miles needed to justify extended drains.

Now if you want to contact one of our Canadian members that will ship this stuff to you, by all means, do so. Otherwise you're asking someone else to really extend themselves in the maintenance of their vehicle just to prove a point that they're not interested in proving.

It's about that simple

We know my beloved GC seems to be able to do 10K miles under ideal conditions. There isn't a lot of data on the new Gold yet, but it seems to have a lot to do with Euro low SAPS requirements. It will be increasingly difficult to compare an oil that must meet new emmissions constraints and an HDD syn like XD-3.

This thread is going nowhere.

1. I've never said there is something wrong with XD-3.
My responses were to a claim that the GC depletes its TBN at 10K miles while the XD-3 doesn't.
All I've asked was to show me some proof. All I've got was a bunch of the 8-10K km reports.
And if no one is driving that much anyway, then what's all the fuss about the XD-3 TBN retention abilities?

2. Gary, thanks for the advice.
rolleyes.gif

Sure I'll fly to Canada or pay some outrageous shipping/customs charges just to get my hands on some obscure oil.

3. The GC is quite unique. So much that a lot of this board members were willing to donate money to analyze its properties and compounds.
And we all know what Terry had to say about the results of that analysis.

4. The GC complies with some very tough industry standards.

The XD-3 is good oil. I don't see any problems with that statement.
Is it better than the GC? So far I haven't seen any evidence.

And you have evidence that GC is better?

Please do show this remarkable evidence that backs your evidence that GC is better than XD3?

Testing results are limited seeing it is AVAILABLE ONLY IN CANADA where it is punished through our extreme conditions up here.

Since we are flashing credentials around maybe I will show you XD-3's:

I just don't see what you are really arguing about? You are treating this thread like it is some sort of personal insult towards you when we are just showing people in Canada the availability of a premium PAO synthetic at half the price.

If you can show us in Canada how your GC is worth twice the price, please let us know.

You like the XD-3 so much - FINE.
I don't have any problem with that, especially considering the cost.

I never said that GC is better. I never said that XD-3 is worse.
You here are trying to prove something about the XD-3, its superiority to GC without showing any empirical evidence.

If it's better than GC then show me why.

If it's better because of the lower price while being a PAO oil, terrific. Good for you guys. You're getting a nice deal.
If it's better because of its superior properties, or exotic compounds, an extremely robust additive package, or better low temps fluidity, or it shows better standard compliance, or acoustic properties, or whatever, then we can discuss that.
Your best argument for the XD-3 so far was that it retains its TBN like nothing else on the market.
I don't wanna go there again.

If you feel that the XD-3 beats any oil currently sold on the Canadian market - Great.
Or if you think it's just an amazing price deal. Fabulous.
You wanna promote the Canadian product - why not.
End of story.
Bye.

Our less driven car is a 2000 Montana van with 63000 mi (had the infamous gasket problem at
36000 mi). The plan is to change out the Mobil 1 5w30 sometime this fall and put in my XD and leave it in for a year. It is likely this vehicle will travel about 10,000 mi in this time period. A Q:

Is it necessary to replace the filter at some point in this year long interval?

I have on hand an the OEM AC Delco PF 47-C. Any other suggestions for a filter givne the extended drain?

just swap the oil filter out at 5000 miles and keep driving.

You will be completely covered with the XD-3.

It is made for a lot heavier applications than our efficient gas engines.

It just toys with our easy load on it.

Highly unlikely.
BTW there is a couple of other oils meeting the BMW LL-01 specs.
Check out the list.

"BMW Specified fluids

These fluids are those specified by name or specifaction for their appropriate applications. Other equivalent fluids may perform satisfactorily, but are not specifically named by BMWAG.
I've narrowed the list to those products that appear to be readily available in the US.
Products with grades or styles specified imply that only those matching are specified. i.e. an approved motor oil in a 5w30 is not approved in 5w-40 unless it is listed.

Engine Oils:

* BMW LongLife 98 Specification for all engines EXCEPT: M54 after 09/01, S54, N62, S62/E39 before 02/00
o 76 Pure Synthetic 5w-40
o Castrol Syntec 5w-40
o Chevron Supreme Synthetic 5w-40
o Texaco Havoline Synthetic 5w-40
o Mobil 1 5w30
o Motul 6100 Synergie 5w-40
o Motul 8100 Synergie X-cess 5w-40
o Pennzoil Synthetic European Formula 5w-40
o Pentosin Pentosynth 5w-40
o Quaker State Full Synthetic European Formula 5w-40
o Valvoline SynPower Full Synthetic 5w-40
o Valvoline SynPower MXL 0w-30

* BMW LongLife 01 Specification for all engines EXCEPT: S54, S62/E39 before 02/00
o Castrol Syntec 0w-30
o Mobil 1 0w-40
o Motul 6100 LL-01 0w-30

For the S54 and S62/E39 before 02/00, BMW only specifies the following:

o Castrol TWS Motorsport 10w-60
+ Castrol Formula RS Racing Syntec 10w-60 is an older name for the above product. Castrol markets a new product under this name which is NOT an approved product.
o Veedol Synthetic Z 10w-60"

Does anybody know whether xd-3 0w30 WOULD LIKELY acheive the ACEA A3 rating and the BMW LL-01 rating if it were submitted for testing? I notice it has the same cst of (I believe) 12.2 which I think the other xw30's coincidentally have that meet A3 (GC, and BMW 5w30 "Synthetic"..to name a few).

I know it might be a tough question to answer, but I'm interested in using this in my BMW once it's off warranty.

Thanks.

I can't see why is wouldn't.

The XD-3 is right along side the GC interms of temperature viscosity and the additive pack is stronger.

I highly doubt ir would be turned down.

BlazerLT & Jim 5,

Here is the Esso 'XD-3 Extra' Product Data sheet

XD-3 Extra Data Sheet

The first sheet of the data list the 15w40 as meeting ACEA E5, on the last sheet of the product data,
the have a chart for 'Grade Specific Recommendations',
Esso recommends the 15w40 to fulfill the ACEA E5, E3, Global DHD-1 requirements.

How silly argueing over oil.

I live in Canada but wouldn't be interested in using XD-3 as it is made for diesels yet has a passenger rating.

I am hooked on the GC now anyway, until my supply depletes.

Yea, but it isn't synthetic.

Now that is a silly thing to say, it is completely made for gasoline engines as well.

Take a look at the data sheet on it.
