GC Question: Upper temperature limit?

GM seems to recommend 5w-30 for their Vettes, all around, unless the temp is over freezing(like in warmer weather)you could use 10w30, as an option. Which I use. The most important thing is that the oil, usually a synthetic, meets the GM4718M code. You will see that code on the container, if that oil is up to specs. If you do anything else, check with your dealer, or you may have warranty problems. My Vettes run, usually 205 degrees, unless they sit in traffic, then it could go up to 225+. When Vettes run fast, they actually run cooler, they're bottom breathers. If you run that high, you may have a cooling problem. I also have an '85 with an oil cooler, hardly ever gets up to 180 or so.

That sounds a bit high for what I'm assuming is a short run up to that speed and back down. If you're seeing that high of a temp and you do this more than once in a while, I'd suggest you stop using the PU 5W-30 (even though it is a very good oil) and instead go with something VW 502.00 approved. An approved oil will have the safety margin in the HT/HS value to make sure your bearings are not being damaged at this high temp. Is your sig not up to date? It says you're using Pentosin 5W-40, which should be more than capable of handling the heat.

Recommend a 5W-40 synthetic for your application. You have a lot invested in your ride which requires a greater margin of safety for the engine.
