Discuss. Also note that my motor is not "new" but factory rebuilt.

Not really a comment about your results, but about what Blackstone considers a proper viscosity range at 100C for an Xw-30 oil: 6.0 - 10.2 ?? Since when? I thought it was closer to 9 - 12.5.

In your case, the GC thinned out quite a bit considering you only ran it for 1500 miles.

Yeah that's what worries me. I will sample again with a 3,000 mile OIC. I have heard such good things about GC. I see Castrol makes 5W-50 but it's not a true synthetic right? So maybe Mobil 1 0W-40?

Yeah that was the old recommendation but now they sell this.

Great car,

and a great engine!

I would run a group 3 synthetic. Amsoil recently published a statement saying they recommend their XL line of oils instead of their top tier stuff.

Try castrol syntec 5w30/ pennzoil platinum etc.....or shoot for a blend.

That doesn't mean all synthetics can be used.

Saying something is "synthetic" is like saying your clothes are made of "natural" materials. There's still a LOT of possible variation.

Agreed but the recommendation was more due the fact that they could not test all synthetics. From what I have found Castrol makes Mazda branded oil so it's likely its a Castrol oil.

So I was looking at Castrol's site and while the numbers look good on the 0W-30, I am thinking of switching to the 5W-50 but it appears that the 5W-50 is a group III and not a PAO. So is a group III really a concern?

Given the wide viscosity spread and worse shear stability of group III (compared to group IV or V), I would expect this 5w-50 oil to quickly shear down to a 40 grade. While a thinner oil in itself may not be a problem for the engine, the resulting deposits may be. But hard to say for sure.

By the way, where are you finding Castrol 5w-50? None of my local auto stores carry it.

Thanks for th input guys, I will probably switch to Mobile 1 0W-40 or look at other Mobil 1 stuff. What group is the Mobile 1 stuff?

Advance Auto Parts has a special right now for 5 quarts of any Castrol Syntec and a Purolator filter for $17.99. That had ahuge Variety of Syntec but not the 0W-30 GC (which Autozone usually stocks)

Again, they are not explicitly allowing synthetics in general. They made one oil for the Renesis that they are calling "synthetic," but that doesn't mean all synthetics are okay. Heck, we don't even know what Mazda's oil is made of and how much is synthetic. It could be mostly dino with a little bit of syn added. There are far too many unknowns to say whether all synthetics are okay to use.

Royal Purple is just taking a stab based on the info they have. Until Mazda verifies what they are saying, it is just educated guesswork.

He's got a point there. I don't think you could achieve 0w-30 classification with mostly dino and a little bit of synthetic mixed in.

Ah, good call. That's probably a fair assumption. I had forgotten it was a 0w-30.

However, we still don't know what it's made of. The point is that it might have a unique base stock composition or additive pack. In fact, I'd say that is likely to be the case. Again, we need to know what it is about this oil that makes it suitable for rotaries before we can figure out what other oils might work.
