What would happen if say a friend of mine was too cheap to buy diesel oil for his very old truck. The truck doesn't get driven much....maybe 2000 miles a year unloaded.

Truck holds 48 qts.

if you mean a PCMO no problem at short mileage HDED has higher dispersants ans TBN BUT will run with a PCMO ZDDP is the same.

I......... errr my friend would rather use a diesel oil. He has seen SAE30 Rotella @ A-zone collecting dust and is hoping to find a clearance on it soon.

$120+ for oil and $30 for filters will break him right now

I just got back from Sam's club. They have a case of Six, one gallon jugs of Chevron Delo 400 15w40, for 48 bucks.

So you could get 12 gallons of delo 400 for 96 plus tax. I did read your post about $120 plus $30 filters breaking him... but thats the cheapest i have found delo.

If it 1962, the diesel is probably a detroit or first generation diesel and calls for a straight wieght. If you put a multigrade like 15w40 in a two/stroke detroit it will burn whatever it does not leak out first. I would bet that engine calls for a 30 or 40 straight wieght.

LOL the truck is mine. I'm trying to figure out how to change the oil on a budget this month since all my cars registration and insurance hit me in Feb.

The engine is a 855 Cummins 4-stroke. Curantly has Rotella 15w40 in it. I just can't do a $100+ oil change this month. I can get the $.49 Chevron car oil though.

I think I may have to buy 2 gallons now, 2 galons next paycheck etc.

Raaaaaaaaaaarrrrrrrrrrr! No Sams club anywhere near me.

Why didnt you say, in that case, before Id put "car" oil in , Id just change the filters and top it off with a gallon of Rotella, that will get you down the road a good month or two.

Most "car" oils that I've seen are also rated CF, and thus carry an older diesel rating.

My modern turbodiesel Nissan has to run nothing past a CF-4, so I'm stuck using "car" oils. Doesn't seem to be hurting anything.

The last time I checked SuperTech HDEO 15w40 was $7.48/gal. I'd change the filters and top off with 4 gallons of SuperTech HDEO 15w40. That should hold it for at least few months.
