Good evening folks. The friend of mine with a 01’ Dakota said he wants to use some of the Providence HD 30 diesel engine oil in it. I said it’s not SP rated. He doesn’t seem to care. Anyone here ran a oil like this in older gas pickup?

Rural King's website says it is SN rated. If the temperature outside is above freezing, run it.
I beg to differ from what this jug shows

IIRC Rural King offers two monograde 30 oils under the Providence brand name, a CF rated diesel oil and an HD 30 gasoline engine oil. The 3.9 likely won't care, but the HD 30 might be more suitable. Dodge Magnum engines really just need motor oil, they aren't dainty.

Correct as I didn’t see the oil rated for gas engines. There was a spot on shelf and price tag etc. if he wants to run it I’ll gladly let him.

The CK4 HPL HDEO 5w30 is real smooth in my Dakota with same v6

I'm not sure how their diesel oil can be both CF and CF-2....CF-2 is a low ash formulation for 2 cycle diesels like the old Detroit's. RK, Tractor Supply and Walmart all offer this kind of product. Shell Rotella T1 also touts being suitable for 2 cycles.

OTOH Chevron DELO actually has a CF-2 only product in their 100 line, whereas DELO 400 SAE 30 and 40 are their monograde 4 cycle diesel oil offerings

So back on topic here; has anyone ever used this on an older gas truck? I know some friends of my late fathers with 60’s and 70’s or even 80’s era trucks use a mono grade.

It will be fine above freezing. There are some UOA’s on 30-weight with this same rating that shows a ‘normal’ add-pack.
They only report the spec that will be of interest to most users.

Are you asking about the mono grade, or about the diesel only rating?

On the mono grade - as mentioned, above freezing should be OK. I wouldn't but only due to cold start possible issues.

On the diesel side - I always thought the main reason not to use a diesel only oil was due to high ZDDP ruining the CAT? Of course if you don't burn any oil, then I am not sure how the cat would be affected at all either way. Does anyone know how that works?

I bought a ton of SAE 30 and SAE 40 quarts in a buisness close out. I ran them for years and years in my 2000 and 2004 Chevy trucks with never an issue. The trucks never even knew it. In a 2001 Dakota? Its a no brainer.

Again, iirc a lot of the more current straight 30 oils have decently low pour points for their grade, it might be worth looking into the data sheets on the the Providence oil to see what it is. Probably still not ideal for a Northeast winter but would be fine down south where I'm at.
