I was on the phone with J.C. Whitney and they had me on hold while they checked to see if a product was in stock.
The pre-recorded phone message that was playing while on hold stated that they had a certain brand of gas line magnet in stock that is proven by EPA tests to improve your mileage an average of 11.6%......

How can they get away with that ??....

If they are thick enough and you put them on the bottom of your gas pedal so you can't use much throttle, they can help your economy.

I finally did a test:

I placed a huge pile of magnets taken out of microwave ovens beside the incoming fuel line on my car, after it had been driving for an hour, and watched the Scangauge fuel flow rate readout while the car was idling. It had ZERO effect on fuel consumption, in two different orientations.

The fuel line magnets focus like poles toward "the center". This is what the dynamic flow passes though. I found some mounted on our water softeners (150kgal/regen cycle, iirc). I removed them since they couldn't alter our hardness readings and installed them on our waste treatment feed stream on our evaporators. The lines got clogged. It didn't just attract material (most of which wasn't normally attracted by a magnet) ..it precipitated it out of suspension/solution. That is, finding a clogged/restricted pipe wasn't fixed by removing the device. It formed a growing attached mass. I assume a dynamic flow of conductors through a static magnetic field is the same as an expanding magnetic field through a static mass of various conductors.

I don't see how it can effect your fuel in some "alignment" thing.

time to ebay my very large collection of super strong hard drive magnets.
now where is the epa link to add to the auction....
