gas backpack leaf blowers

I called the local dealer and he said I can fire up a 13hp one and try it out....maybe tomorrow. But my neighbor told me to use his this fall and they will close them out in December & January and get one then so maybe that is the best bet. The leaves will all be down in 2 more weeks so all I need is one more good shot.
 
In the last 60 days, I've obtained 3 new Echo PB-500Hs, 2 new Echo PB-755Hs and (according to my wife, who bought it without my authorization) a Stihl with what she said was the same HP as the Echo 755s. I believe the model # had a 500 in it, but I'm not sure.

Two of the Echo 500s failed within a week and were returned. The third lasted 5 weeks before it wouldn't achieve over 1/2 max RPM. It's going in for warranty service. All three were purched at Home Depot.

The 755s have joined our fleet (more 755s), and are working without fault. They were purchased at Horizon Irrigation and Landscape.

The crews hate the Stihl. They particularily do not like the non-linear adjustability of the output power. It cost the same as the Echo PB-755H, but doesn't have anywhere near the power. I suspect it will be the longest lasting blower we ever buy, because nobody will use it unless they have to.

Just wanted to say the competition amongst the brand name commercial equipment is taking a hard change. Whatever tomorrow is the past will be past.

One example is Aloha Power Equipment without any notice and being the largest Stihl dealer in Hawaii p*ss some off if you are a Stihl die hard. I've got a feeling Stihl wants dealers only selling Stihl products. If Shin is knocked off here Stihl will make it's move in the market place. Echo in my opinion is challenging the market place because they have a foot hold in North America. I don't like it, you go to a dealer and the consumer has the choice what he wants to purchase.

Any idea of what caused the Echo PB500s to fail? Would be interesting to know. One has to wonder if twelve year old Timmy the tool boy at HD had a hand in it?

I have an old 1984 Stihl brush cutter that wouldn't rev out. I found that fuel filter inside the tank was restricting fuel flow. Another time, I it wouldn't run at less than half speed. The cause for that was the throttle cable being twisted around the shaft partially opening the carb. All is well now.
 
yeah I have one of those walk behind 5 hp blower. Makes cleaning up leaves so much easier. Also the one I have can be either a vac or a blower. You undo a bolt and turn the housing 90 degrees to change its function.
 
Mamala Boy, you are not kidding that the industry is changing. With the GREEN movement, we are going to see lots of technological changes to more "earth friendly" machines. I imagine a lot of it is going to be junk.

Seems like those push models would be fine for open spaces. What if you want to blow out around the shrubbery next to your house? I think the back pack model is more versatile.
 
The back pack can be adjusted as far as air flow. It can perform small task like a hand held and larger jobs a hand held was not made for. For quicker smaller jobs the hand held is preferred..time and ease. If I was going to pick one blower and I needed both heavy duty and light jobs the back pack would be the choice.

Also I should mention the hybrid 4 stroke engines will produce more carbon over the 2 stroke so more maintenance is required long term usage. The larger the engine and prolong usage carbon will build up. Depending on your usage their is nothing wrong with the hybrid engines such as the C-4 Shindaiwa for moderate usage on a commercial level. The hybrid torque is ideal in a blower, performance is awesome.

Given in high hour usage I would not pick up the C4 engines for a trimmers given the amount of hours the equipment is being used. The Shin 2 stroke engine is the better engine in this case as my aim is durability long term.

The only draw back personally is you need to change the oil out frequently which means weekly on a commercial level. If clean oil isn't used long term problems will occur with premature wear and expensive repairs. When you have 3 different operators using the equipment hour usage can be carelessly forgotten.

Those are problems with the 4 stroke on hand held equipment. As far as performance the torque in the 4 stroke is awesome.

Considering how little OPE contributes over all to the hydrocarbon footprint, I think it's nothing but unnecessary regulations being put into place to enhance marketing opportunities for manufacturers to sell more expensive and complicated equipment that will result in beefing up their bottom line at the expense of consumers.

If one really boils it down, how many more hydrocarbons are dumped into the atmosphere to produce the additional steel and manufacture & assemble the additional parts that go into these four stroke engines. How much do the additional trucks hauling a load of raw material to the smelter pump into the air? Now compare that to the DIFFERENCE being emitted by two stroke vs. four stroke OPE! Our governments and regulators are too much over the top to see the forest for the trees. It's a scam folks.

If they really want to do something about pumping hydrocarbons into the air, why don't we stop the military conflicts presently going on? How many hydro carbons are being pumped into the air by the war ships, military transport jets, F18s, helicopters, tanks, APCs and support vehicles to keep these armies going? How about the soccer mom in the Escalade driving one kid to practice? Why not switch all auto sports fuel from gasoline to alcohol? There a numerous ways to achieve fewer hydrocarbon emissions that appear to very much overlooked.

The switch from two cycle to four cycle OPE in the name of saving the environment is a joke. A sad one at that.

For me i just grab a rake and clean out around the house then start blowing all the leaves. If its really bad I use the vac function of my blower and suck the stuff up.

Put it this way a dealer sells a product his first priority is consumer satisfaction. If a dealer sells the Honda 4 stroke and the Shindaiwa hybrid 4 stroke versus a 2 stroke, the dealer knows the potential problems down the road regarding the 4 stroke engines. The dealer will feel more confident selling the 2 stroke

That's the view of the seller as he wants his potential consumer to have satisfaction on his purchase. Unless you understand what's required to maintain a 4 stroke/hybrid with increase torque performance it's better you stick with the 2 stroke engines especially on commercial level with many hours of usage for durability.

Another view regarding the 4 stroke versus the 2 stroke. If the 4 stroke is properly maintained would it last as long as a maintained 2 stroke. Answer no today's 2 stroke is the better engine over the 4 stroke regarding durability. Question is how many even reach the potential hours a 2 stroke can go. Very few most likely an equipment being run daily on a commercial level.

So I ask the dealer what engine would you rather have a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke. His answer I'd rather sell the 2 stroke because there are less potential problems and have consumer satisfaction. So I ask him what would you rather use a 2 stroke or a 4 stroke. His reply a 4 stroke with torque performance because I know how to maintain it and I'm never going to reach that many hours until the unit goes.

Doesn't really matter though. Both governments are trying to look "green" and will do whatever they can to project the illusion that they're doing wonderful things for the environment.

For instance, it's easier to put EPA restrictions on OPE and make it look like progress is being made, than it is to clean up the mess created by mining and processing crude oil from the enormous oil sands deposits.

Let's see? Force "Big Oil" to Spend billions to clean up the big mess? Or, how about a widely publicized inexpensive smoke and mirror act?

I haven't found the problem yet. All the symptoms were the same for all three units. Press the throttle, and the engine revs a bit, then tops out at a low RPM and low air flow. I've confirmed fuel quality and mix amount and quality. It could be something as simple as carb adjustment. I can't blame Timmy, as the units were in sealed boxes when we bought them.
