Garage sizes

I'm planning on building a garage this summer. I have two mid size vehicles, Harley Sportster, lawn mower, and bicycles. I'd like to build a 2ft x 5ft work bench as well.

I was stuck on a 22w x 26d, 16 foot door.

Not sure what's more important, width or depth.

Now thinking of a 24ft sq, 16 foot door.

I can't go bigger. The man door will be next to garage door. All front facing.

Thoughts?

The bigger the better! Go as big as you can IMHO. I had a 22x22 and wished for a bigger one. And I was only keeping my truck and a Harley with a 2'x6' bench and a roll away tool box. I kept my mower out in a shed. I did have some misc things too. Shop vac ect. It's always been my opinion that garages shrink real quick.

If you can't go out, go up.

Build it with a decent attic or maybe even 1 1/2 story.

If you have the space and the cash build it big. In addition to parking space you need room for shelves, tool boxes, and a good work bench.

22x26 or 24x24!

Deeper is great if you are building a 2 car wide garage. Mine is 26" feet deep and it makes it really nice to have a work area in front of the car or room to put a motorcycle there or anything else you want.

If you have mid size vehicles, do you need to go deep? What about 30'x20' A shallow 3 car garage where you put your work bench, bikes and mowers in the 3rd bay. That's 600 square feet.

You would need a 2nd garage door.

Bicycles can hang from the ceiling if need be.

We actually get three cars in our three car garage, plus the push mower, 5 bicycles, a grill, other summer toys and of course, the oil stash and tools.

That's a good idea. What is the width of your garage doors?

24X24 Would be my pick. I have 10' height with an 8' door height. The 8' door height was well worth it.

More lumber yards stock 24' rafters then any other size. 24' square would be the normal 2 stall garage in this area, but it sounds like you will have it full with no problem at all. 24' wide your not banging car doors against each other as much as 22' wide. Check with your local building dept and see if you can get a size variance for extra width or length......worth a try some times.

I have an 18' door that allows entry for 3 small to mid size.

24x26 here. 2.5 car garage. All walls are lined with shelves.

If I had to do it again, I wouldn't use trusses, I hate low "ceilings" even though it's open space.

Long story short, I want a car lift now.

Confused about not being allowed to build up. Usually building footprints are the only things restricted by zoning.

I built the biggest garage I could and poured the concrete floor a year later. The vehicles tamped down the gravel for a better base and I used the money for the floor toward the larger building. When floor time came around a year later, I poured, screeded and floated the concrete myself. It looks professional and I saved a bunch of money. Oh yeah.......... Its a heated floor too.

Concrete work is setting me back almost 10k. I have roughly 6k to spend on materials. We have a little one on the way. I will not build up. Gotta be simple, build in a week with my dad and buddies. Low pitch, trusses, etc.

My priorities are changing...

26x26 here,still not big enough , go 30x30 you will be happy you did.

Oh those. I'd be the guy who honestly and innocently forgets that part. Wouldn't occur to me to get a permit to improve my own home.
