Hope this is the right forum for this. Does anyone have advice on choosing a good garage door opener? Or, any brands to stay away from? Thanks in advance.

I have a Lift Master about 16 years old and have to replace it it shortly.

The worm gear off of the motor ground the nylon gear that drives the chain into "dust".

Do you want chain, belt, or screw drive? Is it right next to a bedroom where a quiet drive would be beneficial (or not)?
What HP rating? What size is the door (I assume existing)?

It will be a new detached garage, with single doors.

You can buy the worm gear and the driven gear in a kit and replace the gears. It is a common wear item and commonly replaced. No need to replace the entire opener unless the opener has other issues.
