My garage door opener quit working this week. It's a Lift-Master Model 1260, 1/2 HP, chain-driven opener. When you press the button the lights come on and it clicks twice.
The opener has a limiter switch with a center contact that travels in one direction when the door is going up, and in another direction when the door is going down. It looks like this:
When it travels far enough in either direction, it comes into contact with another contact, at which time it shuts off. I believe that's when the opener also switches direction so that the next time it run, it goes the opposite way.
What I've found is that it no longer seems to be triggering the direction change. So the center contact is already in contact with one of the others, the motor drives things in the same direction, and the opener shuts itself right back off. What do you all think of this theory?
I've looked on eBay and a new logic board will run me $65 - $70. Given that the opener is 17 years old, it doesn't seem worth that much to fix. I'm thinking that it's probably just time to get a new one. Would you all agree?
If I do get a new one, can you all give me a recommendation on which type: chain driven, screw driven, or belt driven? I'm leaning toward screw driven or belt driven which I've been told are much quieter and generally an upgrade from a chain driven opener.
