BTW,I see you are using 5W30 in your 2011 F150. Does it recommend that weight or 5W20?

The ecoboost recommends 5w-30.

That makes no sense at all.Why have ALL other Ford engines (diesels excluded) use 5W20 and spec. 5W30 just for this engine?

Ford did spec 5w20 in the early Ecoboosts. They recommend 5w20 in my 2010 SHO and from what I (and others) have gathered it was the F150 with it's cam phasers when Ford switched to 5w30. It was easier for them to say Ecoboost = 5w30 then Taurus SHO/Flex/MKS 5w20, F150 5W30. From what I've seen all the other Ecoboosts (1.6/2.0) also spec 5w30.

That is a large debate around here. Most will say yes, some will say there is no need for 5w-30 if it spec'd 5w-20.

Yes,I have asked that q? here before too.But in reality,5W30 is so close and similar to 5W20! If a 5W30 shears to a 5W20 then wouldn't a 5W20 shear to a 10 wt?

A 5w-20 usually has a lower VI and less Viscosity improvers so it is somewhat more shear resistant. Most 5w-30s with the SN spec now are pretty good at being shear stable but some due still shear due to certain situations, conditions, and engines.

WOW,I am so confused now.Why can't they just make a 5W30 with the same specs as a 5W20 and just let all engines run that 5W30? I honestly think the reason 5W20 is speced is due to CAFE reasons, and that's it! An engine that was using 5W30 20 years ago with the same bearing clearances and tolerances that is built today, should still use 5W30! Dayum, that just confused me.

Think of it like this. There less viscosity spread from a 5wt to a 20wt, than from a 5wt to a 30wt. In order to get the oil from a 5wt to a 30wt it will take more viscosity improvers to get it there than if they were only trying to get it up to a 20wt. Since there are less viscosity improvers, there can be more base oil, this can help a 5w-20 be very shear stable.

You can't have a 5w-20 with 5w-30 specs due to the oil weight ranges and limitations. Ie a 5w-30 has a visocisty range of 9.3-12.5 and 5w-20s have a range of 5.6-9.3.

Engines with forced induction can be hard on oil.

When I push my gas pedal down hard it sure forces that gas into the engine! Does that count?
