Hello Jdeare,

I can remember living in a homeowners association for about 1.5 years back during the late 1990's when I was busted for changing the oil in my little Honda CRX. The townhouse association wrote me a nastygram and reminded me of the rules.

From that point on, I did all of my maintenance at 2 am during the mornings when I had arrive for duty at work at 4 am. Old people get their sleep at night. Performed a couple of tire rotations and two oil changes before I finally moved out.

In any case, good luck. I think you can get by with very basic maintenance during the wee hours and escape notice from the old people.

When we were shopping for a new home, as soon as I heard "HOA" or "homeowner's association", I was out.

I do not care how much my wife and family love the home or the neighborhood. I will not have someone dictate to me how I keep my home, what color paint is acceptable, what kind of maintenance or repair work I perform in my garage with the door open or whether or not I can display the American flag on certain holidays. It's not going to freakin' happen. I'm certainly not willing to pay any dues to have that nonsense enforced and/or a lien placed against my property because I chose antique white instead of cottage white for my house trim

Thanks guys! I agree, I won't live in another place that has an association. This is the first home I've owned though, and as far as that goes, it's been a good experience overall. Certainly way better than moving from run-down apartment to run-down apartment every year like I was doing before this.

Bringing your own bucket to the coin-op carwhash for handwashing should not be any issue so long as you keep the meter running. It's no differernt then the next guy using the brush, right? as long as you're paying I see no issue. But,doing it during off peak hours is still probably a good idea.
