I am thinking to use a fuel system cleaner like "techron" but I am wondering if I should do it before I put a new fuel filter or after I get a new one? I am the second owner of the car so I don't know if the fuel filter was ever changed.

Redline SL-1... and before the filter change....

I would recomend that after you do the whole bottle Redline SL-1, and change out the fuel filter....about once a month, put about 3 oz. in a fill-up for continued maintainance and lubrication of your fuel system.

Get some redline SL-1

I tried several fuel cleaners including regane, techron and SL-1 and have never really noticed any change. Still throw a bottle in once or twice a year. However, I always use Chevron or Shell 93 octane with cleaners. So I suspect my engine is pretty clean. Who knows?

I toss in a bottle every other month of Techron or Redline SL-1 depending on the budget. I notice no difference in performance also but I don't worry about it.

The Redline product is cheaper as I noticed/compared the two in the stores.

If the injectors are kept clean you aren't going to notice any difference. Your routine shouldn't allow them to get dirty! In a car with dirty injectors a product like Redline, Techron, Regane, or PI will make a difference.

demarpaint,

I add the bottles as a pre-cautionary measure. Most of the time I use good brand name gasolines but depending on the rising prices in may sometimes use Costco gasoline and suppliment a bottle of Techron/Redline for good measure.

Of those products mentioned I've used all but one. Redline is the only product I've tried that gave me noticable results.

Fact is that the brand doesn't matter as much as the active detergent contained in the product. Of those two have the PEA detergent that is the most effective at removing carbon and varnish desposits and not leaving its own residue behind. Either one will give almost identical results.

I think your plan is a good one. Speaking from experience I can tell you once injectors get fouled up cleaning them in the engine is tough. I had great success with Redline, and pressure cleaning via the injector rail. It took me about 1,500 miles and quite a bit of work to clean up a set of injectors. I was adding MMO Via an Inverse Oiler for years. Problem is the MMO doesn't go through the injectors this way. Ask me how I know. LOL.

What is odd was when I pulled the IAC, it was clean as a whistle, PCV system and EGR where like new on an 88 Ford 4.9L. The injectors were another story. Had I added the MMO to the gas instead of running it through the Inverse Oiler I wouldn't be writing about the dirty injectors. I'm wondering how the other items would have held up though?

Suppose you stopped adding those bottles every couple of months but waited for entire year. I know it is difficult to stay from those addiCtives but at least try it. After couple of years of zero addiCtives, when you put a bottle of Techron/SL-1 you will notice the difference.

Anyone tried the GumOut 2-Step procedure that walmart does? It's like 20$, and from what I understand, it sounds like a seafoam deal, they hook the intake up to an "IV drip" solution thing, and then toss a concentrated cleaner in the fuel tank, and keep the vehicle at high RPMs until the IV drip (it's really a "can" they told me...lol) is empty.

Haven't gotten around to checking MSDS to see what chemicals are in the IV drip and/or the concentrated cleaner....but it sounds promising....
