2002 Chevy malibu 61k miles. Original fuel filter

I put in Techron a couple tanks ago. I think I will run 1-2 tanks of Redline SI-1 then change the filter.

Or should I change it before the SI-1?

The shop wants $60 to change a $4 filter...I think I will try it myself...its not in the tank, just behind it.

I had a bad experience with SL-1 in a Chevy truck. Ran about double the normal maintenance dose (well below the cleanout dose) and the injectors on my truck filled with tiny pieces of acetone soluble [censored]. I had to have the injectors pulled and cleaned and the fuel system blown out. I put in a new filter at the time. I have no idea what the SL-1 broke loose but I would never use it again after that. Others speak very highly of this additive. I don't understand why I had this experience with it.

Its well passed the time to change the filter. I would change it and then run the sl-1. It's a great product and works very well.

Wow. I was going to put one bottle in and run it a bit before filling up. But I guess I wont try that. Maybe just a half a bottle on a full tank. Only a 14 gallon tank on this car.

I ran a full bottle shock dose of SI-1 recently, followed another bottle's worth of maintenance doses in my F150. I then changed a ~7000 mile fuel filter and it was pretty much blocked up.

It cured a sticking gas gauge and smoothed out the truck, it was much more effective than Techron Fuel System Cleaner.

I filled up with shell and put in a full bottle. Excited to drive home today and see if she runs smoother. Wasnt really having any problems anyway, and just ran techron a couple tanks ago.

Of course techron was on sale at pepboys for $5.99 today

Oh well redline was only $7.99 regular price.

Boomer, everyone on here could have a good experience with Redline SI, but if I had a bad experience like you did then I probably would not use Redline SI, sorry it did not work for you.

well Ive put 60+ miles on the tank now and no problems. seems to be running smooth but hard to tell if any improvement. I guess the fuel system is pretty clean from techron or just clean anyway.

I can barely feel it idle with the A/C turned off.

I've tried this product in my Durango and found nothing different with it in my tank other than using a big bottle of Techron. It's only advantage is the price per bottle is cheaper than Techron and claims to be an upper cylinder lubricant.

Sorry to hear you had a bad experience with Red Line SI-1, Boomer. I consider it one of the best pour-in cleaners on the market based on experiences with friends and family over about 20 years.

I also like Techron ... but my guess is that they are effective on different types of deposits. You never can be sure what the problem is so try one, if it works, fine. If it doesn't, wait a tankful and try the other.

Yes FL-400S, I think it's time to change that fuel filter. I make it a point to change them (the in-line filter, often under a door or on the firewall) every 50,000 miles or so.

ANYTHING in a bottle FI treatment with from 30-50% PEA detergent in it will do a very effective job at cleaning carbon deposits in the system...It doesn't really matter WHICH brand you use as long as it contains PEA at those concentration levels.

I do not believe REGANE existed 20 years ago. Techron and Redline do have long history. Gumout cleaners were garbage (just like STP) until they started making Regane. If my memory serves right, it was about 10 years ago that Regane made its debut.

Well I probably need to fill the tank very soon. Ive gone about 265 miles with the Redline and its been fine. I'm not sure I can tell a difference from before, so I guess I wont need to do this too often unless I start noticing a change.

This fuel filter is just behind the tank under the middle of the car. Not sure if I need any special tools. Pretty sure I will need jackstands to get under there.

I agree, I have used a full bottle on a couple different vehicles and no problems.
