Fuel Additive Hyundai Sonata

Hello, looking for recommendation on best fuel additive (1st application) on a 2023 Hyundai Sonata 2.5 Smartstream non-turbo GDI/MPI. The car is 12 months old with 11,800 miles and has always been filled meticulously with top-tier fuel. It has had 4 oil changes done with full synthetic OW-20 to date. My regular mechanic says it's ok to use BG 44K Platinum but wanted to confirm it's compatible with this engine since Hyundai suggests the Chevron Techron cleaner across the board. Also, would like to know the recommended additive frequency moving forward.

FYI, my previous 2019 Sonata 2 4 GDI only engine started burning oil at around 42k miles, trying to avoid a repeat of this this scenario if at all possible. I was consistently using NON top-tier gas at the time. I had the PCV valve changed at that time and had a full GDI service done at the time seemed to help a little bit.

The oil burning wasn’t a function of poor quality fuel, but rather bad design. If you’re using top tier fuel, an additive would be a waste, in my opinion. It’s not going to hurt anything, but the benefit would be pretty miniscule. That said, any additive will be fine. I’d suggest one with PEA, which Techron has, but so do many others.

Thanks JustN89. At the time mechanic said old car's pcv valve was not working properly, that may have been part of the issue but hard to since the 2.4 theta 2 engine has had so many issues including oil burning

Techron is all you need for that engine. The 2.5L is not suffering the same fate as the 2013-2019 2.4Ls.

If it were me I'd use a Euro flavor xW-30 oil (VW 504/507) and change it every 5k miles. I think that G4KN engine takes 6qt of oil. Gumout Regane Complete or Regane High Mileage are ~ US$6 at WM.

I have the 2.0 PFI in my 2022 Kia Soul and my plan of attack has been top-tier fuel, 5k mile OCIs, Mobil 0w40 FS but I'm going to now transition to Valvoline 5W30 Restore and Protect, and I run a bottle of Techron and a bottle of Barryman B12 every OCI.

My rationale, keep the pistons/rings as clean as possible.

Thanks everyone. I'm not too concerned with the oil will go with the manufacturer suggested OW-20 at 3500 miles or so OCI. I was more inquiring regarding what particular fuel additive to use on this 2.5 engine.

Same thing I use in new Mexico, a 5w-30.
Probably a cheaper 5w-30 since it will probably need to be changed more often.

How much oil did the 2019 burn in terms of QTs per thousands of mi?
I just picked 2019 Sonata 2.4 with 23Kmi.
So far not a drop in first 2K mi
Immediately did OC with Valvoline Restore and Protect

the car didn't start burning oil until about 45k miles. It was down about 1.5qt so I had the pcv valve changed and had a carbon cleaning service done. The car was totaled a few weeks later so not sure if the actions I took did anything to help. I would recommend having the pcv valve replaced as it is only a $10 or so item

Did the tech show you the bad valve? Was it a simple anti-backfire pill over a fixed oriface?

I am waiting to see a bad PCV. Saw one once in the mid 70's.
Changed many to no effect, cleaned one once of a bit of white sludge from winter icing - think it was a Honda back in the early '90's.

I was wondering how many miles you had put on it to get down that amount. For example was it 1 1/2 QTs over 3000 miles?
Keep in mind that amount is quite a bit if that’s when you first checked. The distance between the “dots” on the dip stick is 1/2 qt….lot of people with this car aren’t aware of that.
