Fuel Additive For My Accord?

Should I use a fuel additive or fuel cleaner in my Accord? I have no issues with the car besides the normal "winter gas" fuel economy decline. The car has 64K on it and, to my knowledge, has not had an additive to the oil or fuel tank.

Should I leave it as is? "If it ain't broke, don't fix it" mentality here?

Please share your thoughts!

while it doesn't really "need" to be at the end of the oci. Don't use more than 6 bottles per oci.. and generally speaking it makes more sense to use it near the end of oci.

I fill up with generic gas often so when available I'll use aprox 1oz /10-15gallon of gas as a maintenance dose also.

I know someone will shoot at me for this, but...I prefer to use Top Tier gas that already has the better quality cleaners. It is often close to the same price as the other fuels. By the time you pay for an extra additive (and possibly worse gas milage for using "cheap" gas) I feel I am saving $ and my vehicle. Only my opinion-FWIW.

In my Accord, at the end of an OCI, I buy two bottles of Gumout with Regane High Milage at Meijer/Walmart. They are about $5/bottle. It uses the same active ingredient as Techron (PEA), but it's more concentrated.

I dump both bottles in at once, and fill the tank. Run it down to a half tank, refill with fuel. Run it down to half a tank again, and refill with fuel. Run car until near empty.

This way, I get 9 gallons through the car at 2X concentration. Another half tank at 1X concentration. And a full tank at 0.5X concentration.

I think out of 100s of cans of fI cleaner used over 40 years maybe one bottle worked - and thats not a statistical sample.(Shell V power nitrogen enhanced detergent at walmart b4 they stopped carrying it locally fixed a rolling idle in the 09 subaru). I though the midline Gumout was good but it caused hard starting problems.
- it caused hard, long starting for months. So Quality fuel only Id say. Good lucj finding quality fuel. Have had decent luck with Some Mobil stations and Some Irving stations but the fuel quality varies WILDLY batch to batch. Its Russian Roulette.

The original Techron study shows no benefit to overdosing.

They established the correct dosing and interval through actual testing.

For me this is not about the money but because keep clean is better than a cycle of clean - allow deposits to build - clean and so on.

To be clear for the OP, he needs Techron concentrated fuel system cleaner.

Gumout with Regane - regular or high mileage, of Gumout Complete All In One fuel system cleaner are usually the cheapest an I think they have rebates right now too.

Techron or Regane...your choice, equally good.

Although I do agree that using a quality gas in the first place is best, there's no harm in an occasional dose of a good cleaner like Techron or Regane. Every 3000 miles seems like massive overkill, though.

I personally use Amsoil Pi every 10,000 miles along with Shell gas. If I wasn't using amsoil I'd use BG 44K which is available at dealerships or auto shops. Go to bgfindashop.com

Since your car only has 64K miles and no apparent fuel-related issues, Techron really won't do anything.

I decided to use Techron in my Accord recently despite there being no issues present. I thought since the car had 170K miles and Techron is highly-regarded around here, what the hey. It's been in the car for about a month now and I've noticed no changes. Chevron does say 2 treatments might be needed to yield results so I may add another bottle in the coming future and see what happens.

One thing Ive "almost" learned in 40 years of automobiledom, if it aint messsed up dont mess wid it. Especially chems in a can.
