Mom got a new Jeep 2.4L Compass. I looked in the owner's manual and saw that 6k is what they recommend, but I knew it outta get a break-in oil change sooner. I told her to bring it to me at 2500k and let me do the first OC.

She tells me on 4th of July that the "oil change required light" was flashing on the instrument cluster. I asked how many miles and she said "Son, you had it right on the nose; it has just over 2500k". So I assume Jeep has the first OCI pre-programmed for 2500k so that was an interesting coincidence.

Anyway, my intent was to change the oil for her and switch it to Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 and repeat every 6k. She does frequent short trips and mostly city driving less than 12k per year. So I figured with that PP would be a fine choice and i would not conflict with the OEM OC reminder system. Bu there was no way under those conditions I was gonna let her use dino for the life of the car.

Anyway, she tells me on July 4h that I am a busy person and she did not want to burden me with having to worry about her oil changes. I reluctantly cave in (but am glad not to have that additional OC on my back. So here is where it gets good!

I just went through this same thing with my stepdad's '08 Liberty 3.7L and I did manage to do his 1st OC at 3k w/ Mobil 1 5w20 and a WIX filter. But he could give a crud about cars and at 9k on the odometer when the OC light went off, he took it to "The Pennzoil place" and told them to change it and that he wanted synthetic oil (cause he remembered that is what I put in). I assume they gave him Pennzoil Platinum 5w20 but not sure. ANYWAY.....

So Mom said that she wanted to just do like her husband and they did not want me to be responsible for their car maintenance and she promised me that she would take it to the same place he did and she wrote down to ask for Pennzoil Platinum. Well LOW & BEHOLD, she tells me today that she took it in for an oil change but went to "The Valvoline place" and when she asked for Pennzoil Platinum the attendant went into some tie-raid about Pennzoil & wax, etc. He did not even acknowledge it was Pennzoil synthetic she wanted. I admonished her for asking for PP at a Valvoline place and also why she went to that place instead of the same place her husband went with his vehicle.

I had her (this was over the phone) get the receipt and I asked her a series of standard questions all of you would have asked. She said that it was 50 bucks and they used Durablend and they used the weight of oil that was stamped on the oil cap (5w20)and they reset her OEM Oil monitor thingy and also put a sticker on the window. She was unable to tell me if the sticker matched the OLM thingy or how they decided to put in durablend. I explained to her that they should have offered white bottle, dura, and synpower and that the equivalent of PP would be synpower and that is what she should have gotten. At that point she did not want to worry about it any more and said that she needed an OC and that it was not my car to worry about basically (in a nice way of course).

The short questions are:

1.) Will durablend be okay for the described driving conditions @ 6k
2.) If so should she just stick with the 50 dollar rip-off durablend?
3.) If not what is best solution if she voluntarily lets me out of changing her oil with PP & WIX?

thanks

6,000 mile oil change intervals? With an OLM? Be sure and CHECK THE OIL LEVEL!

Yes, Durablend will be fine. I use it in our 07 Impala with that dreaded OLM.

No offense, but when you take on responsibilities for maintaining family vehicles (whether you're doing the work or the quick lube is), IT'S ON YOU. Period. If I asked my mom "the standard questions", she'd remind me that she raised me, and that my father was on the way over to shove his boot up my [censored].

haha funny funny...you got me guys

seriously though I can't help it..I am a BITOG member. It is not an OLM on the Jeep though i don't think...I think it is pre-programed reminders. Just want to be sure blend is good under semi-harsh service (city & FST) for 6k

Durablend is fine for 6k.

Sounds like you're 'nosing in' where you're not really wanted. You're really, really going to frustrate yourself trying to convince these people to do things the way YOU want.

Just tryin' to save you some stress......

Well from a "text on a forum" point of view I can see why you'd think that. But trust me, after all the wrenches I have turned, my family & friends look to me for car advice. I do not actively force any advice on anyone and my mom & stepdad were glad to have my help & recommendations. Some people are just not as "aware" of certain things such as oil and that was fine with the 3k deal. But in today's times, (and after multiple posts) I think it is important to give my best advice when I am asked. The verdict was PP, but she did not want to burden me when it came dowwn to it and I am fine. I just wanted reassurance that the blend could stand up to that because in other posts people seemed to think dino under those conditions was not a good choice so I was set on synthetic and it threw me off when she went & did this. I will sleep well anyway though

But ultimately, the next time, she will do whatever I suggest and as you know, the quick lube is mighty expensive for a full-syn OC and if she is going to take it there, then I would probably go ahead & tell her to continue with durablend if that is a proven oil under FST city driving conditions every 6k.

On the other end of the spectrum, my dad is taking the dealer's advice instead of mine on his and getting Mobil 1 0w40 every 3000 miles on his Jeep LOL. I even posted the page from his owner's manual in my other most recent post but he can do what he wants.

1st of all the Durablend will be fine for 6K. They offer it in the required 5W-20 weight and it meets Chrysler MS6395 and has the API Starburst so you are good to go warranty wise as well.

2nd - the Compass actually does have an oil life monitor(OLM) although Dodge calls it the "Oil Change Indicator"(OCI) so that will be confusing. Let's call it an OLM.

The Dodge version works the same as the GM one. It is based on how the vehicle is used and certain other factors. My 08 Ram has one and it too came on right at 2500. Chrysler seems to have these set up to kick on right at 2500 for the 1st OC. Many people report it continuing on a 2500 mile schedule until 7500 or 10,000 is reached at which point it starts to lengthen.

I have been approx 2800 miles since my last OC and it has not kicked in on me yet. Just the initial kick on at 2500. Also, just FYI, I did an OC at 1500 miles and I personally reset the OLM after and it STILL kicked on right at 2500 miles. So as said factory preset is my opinion.

I would just go by the manual's allowed 6 month/6000 mile schedule and ignore the OLM. Just reset it when it kicks on if it does before the 6K is reached. The manual allows for that long so make use of it. I actually run a 5K 0CI schedule just because it makes it a lot easier to do my maintenance at 5, 10, 15, 20, etc... vs 6, 12, 18, 24, etc... I like to rotate tires at 5K as well so it works out for me.

Also, this is from the 2008 and 2009 Jeep Compass owner's manual. As you said her Compass was "new" I assume it was an 08 or 09...

2008:
Engine Oil Change Indicator System

Oil Change Required:

Your vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. The “Oil Change Required” message will flash in the EVIC display for approximately 10 seconds after a single chime has sounded to indicate the next scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change indicator system is duty cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate dependent upon
your personal driving style.

2009:
Engine Oil Change Indicator System

Oil Change Required:

Your vehicle is equipped with an engine oil change indicator system. The “Oil Change Required” message will flash in the EVIC display for approximately five seconds after a single chime has sounded, to indicate the next scheduled oil change interval. The engine oil change indicator system is duty-cycle based, which means the engine oil change interval may fluctuate dependent upon
your personal driving style.
