Got my gearbox rebuilt by a shady shop and I decided to drain the fluid which happened to be Redline Shockproof. What amazed me was the amount of air bubbles in the oil - and this car has been sitting for 2 weeks. The oil is so thick that even the surface bubbles fail to break & all the lil dots in the oil are air bubbles. Its like 30% of this oil is actually air!!! This oil must froth to all h3ll when running!!!!

Doubt it froths to all [censored]. I have never seen or heard this before with shockproof. Must be something in that stuff. Another Red Line bashing is in the works, I can feel it.

Perhaps - I don't know if they used any additives. I'm glad to have it out anyway. It was wayyyyyy thicker than the 75W90 that replaced it. Shifting is better too. And boy is this stuff sticky - real hard to clean off!

Btw the reason I drained it was because the gearbox was leaking from the shifter - it was 1.2L over filled. =(

Leo:

With all the things you've mentioned wrong ("shady shop", "1.2L over filled") I don't know why you're jumping up and posting a thumbs down on the forum trashing Redline shockproof.

IMO, you have no idea what the "shady shop" did, or what they put in there, and you already know they put 1.2L too much of whatever it was.

Without all of these unknowns, you may have cause to post, but there's just too many maybes and unknowns to draw any useful conclusions, IMO.

When I put the Redline gear oil in mine it was reddish/pink. That does not look like what I used. It looks almost clear. Maybe the picture is deceptive?

No no don't get me wrong guys. I had my gearbox rebuilt by a reknowned shop and they did a really poor job - hence 'shady', but I guess it doesn't have to do with anything. Of course I didn't know this before hand until I got the car back and it had some unrelated problems due to shoddy workmanship eg not all the bellhousing bolts were tightened!

It was leaking gearbox oil which angered me (this is supposed to be a rebuilt box!) so I decided to drain it, which I found it was overfilled by 1.2L. I don't know why the workshop used S/P in the first place as I sure wouldnt do so, but I confirmed with them that S/P was what they used with no additives.

Bottom line is, I'm just trying to say when I drained the Shockproof, it was very bubbly which was much to my surprise. Again I reiterate this car has been sitting for 2 weeks and I drained it cold so there should be no reason for bubbles! Can anyone explain it?

Tones - Shockproof isn't transparent as most gear oils are. Its like mud.
MK - I wouldn't have used SP in the first place. I believe its the 75W140 stuff.
Sprintman - I suppose the 'shady' meant they were using SP in a manual tranny which is generally a no-no.
Pablo - Its a Nissan S14 Silvia - I believe you guys call it a 240SX in the 'States.

I don't want to start any flame war here, just posting my findings on the oil!

My point was simply that you don't actually know that Redline S/P is what was in there. Also, the fact that it was 1.2L over full is significant.

If you had put SP in yourself, to the proper level, and then made these observations it would be a completely different scenario.

I've never used SP, but none of the Redline fluids I've ever used have been light blue that's for sure.

Two problems here.

1. Wrong product for application.
2. 1.2L over filled

Your lucky you did not blow the seals out of the tranny. Put the correct product in there and the correct amount and your probably good to go.

There`s some TT Z32 guys who tried Heavy Shockproof and had it foam up and out of the tranny breather vent when they were tracking their cars.

Try some Amsoil MTG in your tranny. 240SX/Silvia`s probably call for a 75W90 GL4,right?

Yep I've thrown in some mineral oil to flush out the Shockproof, then the Amsoil MTG is going in. Prior to the rebuild I used Castrol Syntrans GL4 75W85 and was happy with it but I'll give Amsoil a go.

You'd be suprised how many people use Shockproof in MT gearboxes - it seems to be the 'cure' for worn or notchy synchros in many cars. I wouldn't use it but a lot of people swear by the stuff.

aquariuscsm - A synchro hub broke due to incorrect assembly.
Craig - Whether it was overfilled or not, it doesn't explain the bubbles. And the workshop confirmed with me it is Redline S/P.

I put Redline Shockproof in my motorcycle final drive last night...it is a funky turquoise color. I just hope I haven't made a bad decision in gear oils. If it foams and runs out the vent, I'm dumping it.

Sure wish Amsoil Severe Gear was available without having to pay shipping.

I am not suprised by how many uneducated people there are about lubricants out there but I would never use a differential fluid in a manual transmission, and least of all, Shockproof.
