A friend of mine is going to require some cancer treatment and he still wants to be able to take care of his lawn instead of paying someone for the privilege.

So he's looking at getting a good new riding lawn mower. He really won't be in the mood to fix or maintain anything in the near term. He wants to focus in other aspects of life.

Is there one that you would recommend for this particular situation. Also, if there is a slightly used model that would be on a healthy discount, obviously that would be worth pursuing as well

Depending on how large the property is he may want to look into electric riding mowers, pretty much almost no maintenance and they do seem to do pretty well.

If money isn't a factor, I'd go for something easy to use rather than focusing on cheap. A Simplicity Broadmoor has power steering and is worth a look.

Given that the OP states a used model at a healthy discount would be a good option, I'm thinking an electric riding mower is out of consideration.

I'd echo the recommendation for a used Deere X series riding tractor, or even a used Scag, Exmark, or Ferris commercial mower if he is looking for a zero turn.
