Friend Is Looking For A Car

If he wants to keep his board IN the car, he needs a small wagon or crossover thing. Choices are pretty limited. No point in being a engineering snob or wanking about driving dynamics - gotta take what you can get.

To summarize the list so far:

VW Jetta wagon
Subaru Impreza
Mazda 5
Dodge Caliber
Hyundai Elantra touring
Chevy HHR

Might as well add:

Chrysler PT Cruiser
Scion XB
Scion XD
Jeep Patriot (avail with folding/reclining split rear seats)
Jeep Compass
Kia Rondo (discontinued, I think)

If I were your boy, I'd get over the parent thing and buy a Matrix XRS.

The 5dr is lighter than the Forester, and has exactly the same drivetrain, so it would eat the Forester for breakfast as well.
The Forester is an Impreza based vehicle, but is fairly large and heavy.
We have one, and I can assure you that speed is not one of its virtues.
Still, even the NA Forester, with 170 bhp, would eat any Yaris alive.

Thanks for the summary.

He went and test drove a few cars today and thinks he wants a Prius instead. They have some very strong incentives on that car right now and a new base model can be had for ~$21.5k. So, that's another option that is being considered for now.

I'd buy a BMW over a prius ANY day...but that's the problem - two TOTALLY different cars, you can't really compare them!

That is not typical of BMWs, or else the company would be out of business and would not have the #1 selling near-luxury sedan.

The newer E90 chassis cars have been far more reliable than its predecessors, based on what the E90 forums are saying.

More reliable than an E30? Doubtful. Not over the long-run, due to electronics, Im willing to bet.

That said, they should pose no issues for the first xxxxx miles, just like any other car. It is all a matter of being up on things after that and knowing a good shop. Otherwise you can and will get ripped off, whether it is a BMW or a Honda.

The search for a Prius is off, at least for now. He couldn't stand the Fisher Price interior after driving the VW and the BMW 328i.

He wants a Golf TDI, but it's out of the budget. So we're going to see if we can find a demo or a slightly used one.

Good luck on that search: Usually people who buy TDI VW keep them until they die (or at least reach 2-300k miles). Nobody lease TDI cars, they all buy them.

At least, that the case in my neighborhood. Let us know if it is different where you are, that will be interesting.

OUTBACK ? My other halves' sister just bought an 2011 automatic and is getting 30 m.p.g.. She got the top of the line model . Could get the lower or mid model . Should be less than $21,000 .
