A friend is lending his 2016 Dodge Grand Caravan (< 80,000 km) to his daughter for a few weeks while she (the daughter) looks for a 2nd vehicle.

He wanted to do an oil change before turning it over to her, suspecting the hood won't get opened for the next few weeks. We were planning to do it at my place, but he got a coupon from a nearby chain muffler-and-brake shop advertising a full synthetic oil change for $49.99. (All prices I'm quoting here are in C$.)

My all-in (12% tax included) cost of materials to do an oil change is about $40 for 5 litres of SuperTech and an oil filter, so he was looking at not much more ($49.99 + 12% tax = $55.99) to have the shop do it.

He had the work done this morning, and dropped by a few minutes ago to show me the invoice. Unsurprisingly, the invoice exceeded the expected $56 ...

They sold him a couple of expensive wiper blades as well, and I think there were some other oil-change-related charges - disposal fee, and some other stuff. He was in for over $110.

But the shocker was the stuff they "found" that needed repair.

1. Brake fluid flush - c. $200. Yes, the fluid is brownish - I would change it on my vehicle. (In fact, each oil change I usually syringe out most of the fluid in the reservoir, so in the vehicles I look after it usually stays pretty clean.) Anyway, he's picking up some DOT 3 brake fluid, and we'll do a brake bleed tomorrow, likely for < $25.

2. Front brakes - They quoted about $1200 (plus tax!) to do the front brakes (rotors, pads, and calipers). I inspected the brakes a few months ago when we did the seasonal tire changeover. They were fine then. We'll have another look at them tomorrow, but I suspect they'll still be fine. The van has only been driven parts of two winters - the rest of the mileage has mostly been put on in the summer. Therefore, I'd be surprised if the calipers are rusty (the usual cause of failure here). On these vans, the rear brakes tend to wear out first. Strange proportioning, I suppose. We did the change the rear brakes earlier this year (pads and rotors), so at least the shop had enough decency to not say they needed replacing.)

Anyway, the $49.99 oil change could have quite quickly become > $1600. Buyer beware!

The coupon is to get you in the door to find other work, now if they're honest I'm fine with that. It sounds like the brake fluid flush is honest. Let us know what you find when you inspect the brakes.

If they're replacing calipers, I'd expect a discount on the brake fluid flush.

Unfortunately pretty standard for these shops and many dealerships. I found a quality mechanic, who doesn't really upsell, but he is now 30 miles away from me, so I am on the fence about using him, given where I now live. I have to leave the vehicle there to get work done; it was much easier when I was only three miles away.

I have the women in my life to decline all recommended work, telling the advisor that the work must be cleared by Dad, Brother or Husband.

Pretty standard with many shops (independent or dealer). My understanding is these are usually 90% done by the service writer and in many cases, they don't even look - they recommend brake fluid flush, engine / cabin filter replacement, etc and say "based on mileage". They say that just in case you did a brake flush the day before and replaced the filters 2 weeks prior. That's still a shady way to have an "out" on their recommendations. Brake jobs, "leaking" shocks, and others are frequent up-sells as they presume that 80% of people can't check themselves.

Yeah, we dropped my Son's 2003 F150 off for state inspection last week. It passed but the shop (they are honest, we have dealt with them for 30 years) said the rear pads were getting thin (disc in rear on 99+). It was gonna be 900 bucks for rear brakes plus a brake fluid flush. Screw that, will be a good time spent with my teenage Son and we'll save about 750 bucks. Prices are out of control.

Oil change deals like that usually always state things like up to 5 quarts, plus disposal, plus tax. Some vehicles may be higher, etc. Wiper blades are usually $20-30 at most shops, which isn't crazy out of range. You are assuming the brakes are good. And out of curiosity, where are you that tax is 12%?

For C$30 we can buy Bosch Icon blades in Canada, my fav blades. Canada is a severe tax land, you don't want to know what income tax is like here.

Midas on Main Ave in Norwalk, a few years ago, my car had 70k miles back then and was in dire need of rear pads. They were down to the metal.

Guy comes and serves me the following, with a tone like I'm an idiot (he might be right on that one, you never know), and he's doing me the favor of my life.

- We checked your rear pads, they are gone. We also need to replace your rear calipers.

- Huh ?

- Yeah, you let your pads wear so deep that the pistons overextended, and the calipers are now damaged. Can't be fixed and I can't let you back on the road like this.

- Pal, I have some past experience with calipers, and I have yet to see pistons overext...

- YOU DIDN'T HEAR ME. I'm telling you that they are damaged and that I can't let you out of the shop. You need new calipers. It's $1400.

- Sir, I thank you for your insight, you're right, safety above all. I'll pay you cash on the spot. All I need from you is a signed document on your letterhead stating what you just told me. Emphasize on the part that my calipers are not repairable because the pistons went too far and can't be pushed back. I used to work in a tire shop to get me through college, and I am amazed at how technology has changed and I...

- We'll compress your pistons back but you should have them checked.

- No no, let's, replace them, I just need that paper that...

- Your car will be ready shortly. NEXT !!!

Them lying, thieving, sleazy lowlifes. May the fleas of a thousand camels infest their armpits.

Manitoba - 5% GST (Federal sales tax), and 7% Provincial sales tax.
