Date code on the engine puts it ~1989. It looks a lot better after pressure washing, and it started on the second pull after I dumped the tank and put in some fresh stuff. The P.O. said he hadn't used it in a few years, but he kept it really nice shape.

I've got a new deck idler pulley and drive wheel on the way, but it moves/cuts/stops no problem. I didn't really need another rider, but after fencing in our front yard there was no way to get out 42" tractor through the gate. I don't mind using our little 20" MTD, especially after installing ball bearing wheels, but this little guy slides right through the gate and maneuvers around the garden beds like a pro. It's interesting to use, the engine/seat are on an articulated mount, independent from the deck/steering which makes it impressively comfortable over bumps.

Here's to keeping the old stuff going!

I had one and never wore it out. It was still running when I moved to a zero turn. Replaced 1 drive wheel. Those little 1 cylinder B&S would run forever if you did decent maintenance on them.

Seen many of these posted. Some of them cam w/I think a 16hp vanguard even. Problem is these are only for postage stamp smooth yards and with only 8 hp you'd need to mow twice a week. Seen where some folks have put on the b&s opposed twin cylinder engines. Some YT content on them as well from a few good channels.

That is the epitome of bullet proof and simplistic design !
hopefully your lawn is smooth they are bone rattlers

Those 5HP engines are near bullet proof if the oil is changed even every 5 years. The rubber friction disc is about the only thing to fail, and sometimes the bronze axle bearings would get sloppy.

Plenty smooth for this little guy, its a very small patch of front yard. The wife's garden beds have taken over most of it, and the chickens and geese ate all the grass in the back yard.🤷‍♂️
