Last week I ran across Microsoft's new "Microsoft Security Essentials" antivirus/antispy, etc. and good reviews. So far I've put it on about 5 or 6 machines and it found and killed a trojan nothing else and two "experts hadn't gotten rid of on one.

Replaces all the miscellaneous stuff, runs in the background without conflicts and is FREE.

3 versions XP, Vista/7 32, and vista/7 64.

Uninstall other stuff before installing.

Microsoft Security Essentials

I have Microsoft Security Essentials, Avira and SuperAntiSpyware on my laptops for a few months. Since then I did not have any virus.

Probably anti-trust issues.

I've been using Microsoft Security Essentials since last fall when I upgraded to Windows 7. It seems to work great. I've been asking out IT guys at work why we pay all the licensing for Symantec instead of just using MSE. I believe it's mainly that Symantec is status-quo.

Good point.

Surely there could be "some way" of stopping "malicious code" from executing.

IMHO, Microsoft's latest "User Account Control" did a great job.....BUT, it still falls short....when "newbies" get lost in all those "Are you sure you want to do this?" prompts, they are likely to blindly "allow" a bad guy(virus)....

And under most instances in my IT experience, that's the problem...one instance, my mom found a "Security Tool Scan" banner on myspace that said "You are Infected!" and sure enough, she clicked it, downloaded it, and let it "scan" then it wanted to charger her $ to "fix" the [censored] that the app just installed....

So she whines and cries, get me some real ANTIVIRUS to stop this from happening.

I take a look at her Windows Defender log, sure enough, she "allowed" this "fake" Security Tool Scan to download, install, and "scan" her computer....lol.

I think everyone allows it. nobody reads the messages. On vista I think most people (like me) turned off the "user control" to not have it ask after every click if you really wanted to click.

I've found Symantec way too intrusive, AVG was pretty good bot got too big and slow, ENOD let too much through.

Probably anti-trust doesn't let them bundle it.

Have been using it on our desktop and two laptops for sometime now.

Only change I made under Settings was to change the "When" to Daily. Time to when I may have the computer on, & removed the check mark from "Start the scheduled scan only when my computer is on but not in use. By doing this the computer will download the latest anti-virus software then scan the computer in the background.

According to their web site it is free for home use or home based small business.

Since all my security forces are in Prevention layer of protection, Detection offers by AV isn't important for me anymore.

I do only from time to time (once per few months) scan my system using AV which doesn't need installation on my hard disk - Dr.Web CureIt!, and if I really boring also MBAM scan. That's it.

I've found that MS Security Essentials is good for people who aren't technically savvy. I can set it up on their computer, and let it do its thing.

My best friend brought me his computer... no security software. It took me three days (working an hour or so at a time) to get all of the junk purged from it.

I installed Security Essentials on that machine, no more problems for him.

I'm running Security Essentials on this laptop now, but am still running Avast on my desktop computer.

Virus protection becomes even more important.
